well, I am just on my way home from selling the calves... prices were decent this week (year)
in CDN$
660lb roan steer, 1.19
550 lb red steers 1.25-1.30
450 lb red steers 1.35
and our miniature guy, 345 lb went for 1.69
heifers 405 1.28
500lb 1.21
550 1.13
there were a few I thought were nice calves (heifers in particular) that went for much lower than I figured, and some that went for a little higher than i figured as well
there was one gray steer at 375 who was ugly as sin, and he got 1.57, and a nice ark red heifer at 690 who only went for .89 (I actually would have bought her as breeding stock, she was really solid)
anyhow, lets hope the market doesn't tank next year and that this year isn't just a carrot dangled in front of our noses... in this area the cattle herd has decreased by about 35% in the last 5 years.. all the little guys are out, and so are some of the bigger ones
