Kamar heat detectors

Anyone have any experiance with the Kamar heat detectors? I put three of them on heifers this past weekend, I followed the instructions closely and used the template they provided for placement.

1 of the 3 worked. It did bust and was plum red, but non of the other ones busted. They were creased and obviously been pressed on but they did not bust.

This was first time I used them and curious if I did something wrong or rather they are this inconsistent in working.

If they didn;t break they probably weren't ridden hard enough to make them break. here is a silver heat dector that's go the stuff that scratch off loyyory tickets have on them that work much better.

Those are the kind I am going to try next time. Was not pleased with these.

When a cow has an uneven tailhead you just need be make sure you glue them on one of the higher raised areas and not in a valley. They work well, but when there is low hanging branches they are often broken when the cow isn't in heat.

The scratch card types don't stick as well as the Kamars, but I have heard that using the Kamar glue on the Estrus Alert stickers will give good results. It was posted on this forum a few months ago, can't remember who posted it, but it was a similar thread to this.

I could see that working, the glue was some pretty gooey stuff.

Estrus Alert stick fine if they are warm, and hair is clean. Also really press em on hard. I have never lost one, but my wife can't get one to stick.
Maybe it's the same reason I can't fold clothes very well. :roll: :oops:

I have used both for several years. I have learned:
NEVER put pour on dewormer or delice on cattle - dissolves all the glue!
Place tags (either one) close to the tailhead on TALL heifers/cows.
Place tags on higher spot (as mentioned)
Red doesn't always mean ridden - must see other signs.
Never use applicator - too complicated for me. Just get your fingers stuck up with glue & keep going.

On a serious note - I prefer the "scratch off" ones for ease of application (don't get fingers stuck together), but don't trust the "glue". I also, have used the tube of glue for added "stick" on them.
Always remember though, they are just TOOLS. You must see other signs.

Are you SURE the other 2 were headed the right direction? If a Kamar is on backwards it won't break very easy.

Are you SURE the other 2 were headed the right direction? If a Kamar is on backwards it won't break very easy.

hmmmm never checked that, I was holding the heifers and wife was doing the application. I will have to go check, I know one of them is still stuck on.

Probably the wife's fault!!!! I thought it would be rare for me to mess up. ;-) :lol:

If you would quit playing and put a bull in the pasture you wouldn't have to worry with them.
Again place grass in front of cow, place bull behind cow in 283 days 500 dollars arrives.

The bull might mess up the hair on them pretty little show heifers. All that work down the drain brushing, washing and grooming ;-) :lol:
