what's the best way to get rid of a stump? My dad wants a few stumps around the house and barn gone, and has threatened the use of black powder and assorted flammable materials. Since I want him stick around a while longer, I'd like for him to try something a little less dramatic. While he does prefer explosions and danger, I prefer to still have a dad. Most of the stumps around are prob. 2 ft. in diameter, varying in age from being cut. They've been cut down to 4-5 inches above the ground. Any thoughts?

now thi will be alot of work.but you can digg all the way round the stump 1 or 2ft.antry to pull yjem out thatway.if you can get the roots loose.the only sure way i know is using a dozer on them.scott

A dozer is out of the question, unfortunately. I think he just wants an excuse to blow something up. Which does have its merits...

You can rent one of those mini-trackhoes. They aren't very expensive and they can be as much fun to run as blasting is.

He would definitely go for operating anything larger than his little 2000 Ford tractor.... I may have to mention that to him. Hmmmm..if he got it over a weekend I could play with it too....hmmmm

dad digs our old pine tree stumps up with the bucket on the tractor. makes a huge mess but whatever.

Rent a stump grinder. Actually I am for the TNT. Always wanted to try that.

You can take a 55 gallon steel barrel with both ends out, place it over the stump with bricks around the edge to raise the barrel a little off the ground. Throw in some dry limbs and other kindling, set it on fire and the stump will eventually burn, need to stay with it and feed the fire for a while. Also wait until after a nice rain, cinders can fly a long way.

I've heard of burning them out, but with using burnt oil. If a representative of the EPA is reading this, I just THOUGHT that I've heard SOMETHING about how oil will burn.

HatCreekFan (sorry, I'm batting 1000 tonight - must be Monday! ), a friend of the family was telling us about something he used that totally eradicated several stumps and their root system, unfortunately I wasn't paying attention. But, the good news is that Mom wrote it down so I can get the name of the stuff. If you would like, I would be more than happy to get the particulars for you. No dynamite or any other kind of explosions involved. BTW, what is it about you men that you like big explosions? :o I'm just curious.

Still remember my first round - I counted but was out by one. Hated going back to the face. Shift boss was none too happy either. Turns out they all went - just a mis count.

One winter and you could make up for a bunch of those losses. I personally do not think I will ever work underground again.

Bez I,ll just keep my funny memories  To be honest I want to be home with the Mrs and family every night.

frenchie - like me - you are just getting old and soft.

The days of being a hard nosed guy are starting to fade.

Not a bad thing in my books.

Stay well,

Bez'
