Friend of mine is dead set on buying a John Deere hay roller. He doesn't know much about them and neither do I. I have always been a vermeer or new holland guy. He is looking for a 4x5 string tie roller nothing to fancy but will be rolling around 350 rolls a year. What models would y'all suggest? And he will just be rolling dry hay.
 
If he's realp patient and mechancially inclined a 435 wouldwork. After going therough that series and now upto a 466 that would be the minimum I would recommend. It's ten times the baler the old 435 balers are.

Ya my neighbor had a 410 that thing was nothing but junk!! He's wanting a newer one something no older than than around 10years
 
I've been baler shopping since this spring, and had all intentions of buying a JD 468 or 469 but just couldn't justify the prices of their balers. I've always owned Vermeer balers and wound up buying a used 604M for about 7 to 9k less than a comparable green baler. The Vermeer also weighs 2500 lbs more for the same baler, I just couldn't justify spending the extra money on what I consider to be a lesser built piece of equipment.

Even if you got the JD you would have painted it yellow

Funny, that's exactly what I told the salesman at the local JD dealership.
 
You know, John Deere has just come out with a 459E baler intended to be a little more afordable for a smaller volume kind of baler operation. If you friend is wanting to buy new, that just might be the ticket for him:

I have a John Deere 467 Baler that I have had for probably 8 years now and have been really pleased with it. If he is buying a used John Deere baler, I would suggest getting at least a "6 series" (meaning the baler model ends with a 6). Newer series than that end in the "7" like mine, "8", or the current models ending in "9" are obviously even nicer (and pricier).

I'm very close to making a deal on a 604M also. How do you like it so far? I'm hoping to start putting up balage so I will need the high moisture kit put on it. Have you by chance put any wet stuff through yours? If so how did it go?
 
We had a 457 and really like it. Just upgraded to a 459 with net wrap and silage. I was at a Vermeer dealer and saw he had a 510 JD in the shop. He said it was made by Vermeer and they had the same parts. I think JD started making their own with 5 series.

Well, the baler is sitting in a barn in Missouri at the moment - paid for but I've yet to lay eyes on it. I'll pick it up in a month or two and hope it's as nice as the pictures.

Not sure how far Dodgeville, Wisconsin is from you, but R-Equipment there has a very sharp Super M that I came real close to buying. Only reason I didn't is that it's a 1000 shaft machine and it was too cost prohibitive to swap over to 540.

A buddy of mine has a 604M that I borrowed this past spring when my old baler acted up, and he bales a fair amount of baleage with it. He likes well enough, initially I believe he made some adjustments to the pickup cam timing so it feeds better, but that's been about it.

If you get one, let me know and we'll compare notes.
