ive lost my mind got peachicks

as most of yall know im a cattleman. but i also have another weakness chickens . along with turkeys an guienies.now ive added 7 peachicks to the mix. cant wait to see what colors ive ended up with. but they are babies so itll be a long wait. scott

Hope you don't plan on having a garden. Those aggrivating bast**** will peck and divit everything in the garden. Tomatoes,cucumbers,squash,watermelons ,cantalope all ruined. They love to roost on your new truck or car too. Scratch up every thing. Best thing about them is seeing the feathers fly after fireing both barrels from a 12 guage shotgun.

You obviously can tolerate a racket. My cousin had a bunch of guineas that squawked and chattered so much I don't know how they had time to eat. A raised up a dozen for grasshopper control and after they were big enough to let out of the cage the coyotes relieved me of all but one in a couple weeks time. The last one disappeared a few weeks later.

Wouldn't all peafowl grow up to be "peacock" colored?

I used to have pea cocks-but the damn things wouldn't stay at home. I hatched the eggs under a chicken hen but they went down the road to neighbors after they were two years old. I still have alot of chickens.

i can handle their noise. as for guienies they dont bother me either. i know im crazy for getting them . i love stuff like that . as far as getting lose goes gonna try to keep all their wings clipped. scott

This reminds me of another one of those funny stories. Our home was in a flood about 5 years ago. We had two geese that stayed in the back yard that we hand feed. They were pretty much tamed. We keep there wings clipped so they couldn't go to far. We decided we were going to have to move the geese somewhere else till we found out what we were going to do. My mom said she had a friend that didn't mind to feed and take care of them till we could find somewhere else to go. Mom came over and I had them in a box for her to take out to her friends place. I put them in the back seat of her car. She asked me if I was sure they would be ok there and I told her yes. Mom I feed them everyday, nothings going to happen, just keep your windows up. So off whe went. As she was passing by our local Walmart the male goose decides that he wants to attack my moms head. She said she was going all over the road trying to get that dumb goose off of the top of her head. To further complacate matters the female comes in the front seat and sets down by her. She ends up pulling over to the side of the road for several minuites. She never told me what happened to them, I think she stuffed them in the trunk of her car till she got to her friends house. I really don't think she has ever forgave me for this, it still comes up sometimes when she is mad. When she called and gripped me out about what had happened I just couldn't stop laughing. I could just imagine driving by about that time.

its stories like that that make all the headaches worth it.i knopw it isnt going tobe easy having peafowl. but it is fun to watch them . no matter if im tired or stressed they can relax me. ive been out late evenings chasing guienies an turkeys . getting them back where they belong. so madd i can spitt. but in the end i end up laughing my head off at them . scott

bigbull we keep a few peafowl around here. You’re right, it will take a while to know which are cocks and which are hens. And it will take the cocks a couple years or so to start growing eyes on their tail feathers. We think they’re entertaining and haven’t had any trouble with them in the garden. They are fun and funny to watch. Every evening they escort the chickens to the hen house, harassing any stragglers, and put them up. Then they head back up near the house and roost in the trees. We only have a couple of guineas (coyotes got the others and two is enough for me anyway) and the peacocks are always playing tag with them. They pay more attention to the rooster than the hen. They will chase him, then he will chase them. I like the cry the peafowl make. Between the peafowl, guineas and dogs we could be running a still – you can be sure nobody will sneak up on this place.

do you have to feed guineas or can they fend for themselves enough to get by? peacocks are pretty but i thought they were mean. dont know anything about birds here, had some chickens hwen i was little but they were mean as hell. couldnt play outside without the maid/nanny gaurding me with a broom. talk about something funny, you should have seen ol Ida knock a chicken with a broom...

Guineas can make it on there own, they are wild in Africa. They will eat the heck out of bugs, If you get some just wait and see the difference in the amount of insects around your place. You wont see a single june bug and they are heck on ticks. They do have a long range though, and they make several rounds throughout the day. And not to mention a great watch animal. You will be alerted anytime someone trespasses. All fowl can really make it on there own even chickens

Scott, I went out a little while ago and tried to get a shot of Our Peacock with about 8 Wild Turkeys. It was too foggy to come out good. This is an everyday occurence with this crazy bird. He showed up about 2 years ago, and socializes with Turkeys all the time. Even struts his stuff for Gobblers.PM me if you want the shot I took. Not good enough to post.

I seems that they lost some of those survival instincts when they were imported/domesticated. It's the same with pen reared quail, pheasant, etc. I have relatives that release quail and pheasant by the hundreds on our place for their bird hunting operation. Even in pastures with suitable habitat they rarely survive longer than a month. They never completely acclimatize to a wild setting.

Can I jump in here and ask a question? I have quineas and used to let them run free until winter. My old dogs never bothered them a lick. My new dogs are another story though. They kill them faster than I can pick them up. I have tried everything I know to stop this. I've tried tying a dead bird to them for a few days, tried beating the dog with the dead bird, tried tying dead bird to an electric fence so when it went back for it they would get a shock, and tried a shock collar. Nothing has worked. Anyone got other ideas? I would really like to let the quineas run free again.
