Got a couple of tenths of rain this weekend but it wasn't enough. Fires continue to burn. Last Thursday there was a fire storm which literally shook the ground. 300 foot fire devils threw logs and debris from above setting off more blazes. Everyone was told to evacuate.
Today, the arson's fire took off again after laying dormate for two weeks.

This is a shot of a turtle. He is nothing but ash.
Reckon I ought to start bathing more often, once a week doesn't seem to cut it.
This gives you an idea of how penetrating the soot is. Air filters have to be cleaned several times a day.
To give you an idea of the intensity, this afternoon we lost roughly 400 acres in less than three hours. This fire started from the area the second picture was taken even though there doesn't seem to be anything left to burn - it did again today. We need rain, and lots of it and fast.

How far north is the smoke going? When they had the big fire in central Mexico about 10-12 years ago I was driving across IH 10 between S.A. and Houston and there was a stretch for about 30 miles where it was like driving in a heavy fog.
Is access a problem? Has anyone thought about calling in the Smoke Jumpers?

the smoke here in bradenton sarasota florida is like a fog from local fires as well. its awful breathin outside. the fires are about 50 mi fom here but only about 20 from my home. cant see the sun thru it

Here are a couple of pictures a friend gave me for my files. Keep in mind the winds yesterday were 10-15 with gusts up to 25 so the head of the fire was moving roughly 5-6 mph.
As of this afternoon the wind dropped and we put some D8's with KG blades in the woods to plow a 50' wide fire line around the fire. However, there is an environmentally sensitive area that they cannot plow any breaks in due to some BS law so they have to drop water from above. If it jumps this break or if it finds its way through the "sensitive area", it will get in some paper company land that is about 4 lots of 3-5 year old planted pine with broomsedge underneath. With the same north winds, there will be no stopping it. I estimate it will take about two days to get back on us again and pretty well gut me and I will lose a significant portion of my lifes work.
On a positive note, the feds are involved now and with them their many toys. Tonight the USFS will be taking infared photos of the fire to id the hotspots so they can surgically attack them tomorrow. The airforce and the army have both chipped in some helicopters capable of dumping 2000 gallons of water per scoop. Watching these guys will make you want to reup.
