Well our first calf isn't due until 10/2 but three heifers had 4 calves today so I guess our calving season has officially started. I hate a cow to have twins but I really hate when a heifer has twins just a bad thing all around. The good news is she had them unassisted they are both alive and she is taking care of them, but it is a bull and heifer so just dang. The other two calves one was a bull out of our Coleman EXT bull the other was a Consensus 7229 heifer calf. The twins were out of 6149 the dam is a Regis out of a Boyd New Day 8005 daughter.

Have you ever run a DNA test to see if a twin heifer is a free martin?

I have no idea if they are accurate tests or not ... but if they are, doing one could give you a better sense for what you should do here.

No we have never DNA tested a twin. To be honest haven't thought of doing it, but probably wouldn't this one the heifer only weighed 32 pounds the bull calf weighed 42 so not much to work with on either of them. The first calf heifer that had the twins took both for the first few hours both nursed and we were planning to pull them all up and manage them to help her along. However by yesterday morning she had made up her mind that she was only going to raise one calf and had chosen the heifer, she would not let the bull calf anywhere near her, we pulled the bull calf and now have a project for the twin granddaughters. Not a perfect solution but good training for the girls. Genetically these calves are really good but they will both go to the sale barn as future feeders not stay around for breeding stock.




One of the Gilmore Girls learning to bottle feed, the problem is the bottle is a little to big for her to handle at this point, but she is getting the idea. They named the calf baby moo.

I love the ability of little kids to give awesome names. Or, names that are cringe-worthy.
 
Baby Moo update, went out to check cows yesterday afternoon, found one of the recips that had just had a still born calf. Calf looked fine other than the fact it was stone dead, the cow is a 11 year old that has never missed and is an excellent mamma. Nothing we could do about the dead calf, but this was an opportunity to graph the twin that we had hauled home to bottle feed onto a new mamma. Called our son, he ran to our house picked up Baby Moo, we got the calf to the farm took the dead calf and rubbed it all over Baby Moo then took Moo to his new mamma. She knew something was off and we weren't 100% that she was going to buy into this idea but by the middle of the day mamma was licking Moo and standing for him to nurse. So our calving woes continue, now to try to explain to two three year olds why they can no longer bottle feed Moo.

Well, you saved yourself a lot of work by finding him another momma :)

My friends grandkids got some choice names for their animals.. A pig named Moo (yes), a BLACK cow called rainbow (she was a tiger stripe at one time), Another pig called Monkey (and Wiener). I can't remember the others, but I know I'm missing some.
 
They named the calf "MOO"? MOO who? Moo one or Moo two? Mamma refused MOO? Oh, BOO HOO! But - if the mamma refused MOO, and the recip, WHO lost one and became BLUE TOO, accepted MOO, then YOU don't have to BOO HOO or say FOO, YOU can stay out of the GOO (that is mixing the colostrum STEW), cry "YOO HOO!" to the neighbors TOO, and tell the G-kids to SHOO - there is no more MOO, and you have no CLUE where she FLEW!

Lol you guys are having way to much fun. As of today we have had 14 calves our first due date based on palpation is 10/2 our heifers should start on 10/05 but 12 have already arrived so needless to say this should be a very busy couple of weeks.
