.... why women live longer than men. According to Harvard University the average life span of women in the USA is 79 versus 72 for men. According to their research men ages 15-24 are 5 times more likely to die than women due to what they call the "testosterone storm". After this "I ain't skeered" stage the percentages narrow until male death rate surpasses women's from ages 55-64 usually due to heart disease, suicide, car accidents and illneses related to smoking and alcohol use. According to Harvard data.
But Harvard does not explain the all important WHY and this is where my epiphany begins.
Today I invited an elderly lady to have the first picking out of my fall garden and told her she was welcome to bring anyone she wanted. She was very thankful and called and informed me they were on there way. I met the three of them in the garden and two of them were very pleased with the shape of the garden but the third was upset with it cause according to her, "its hasn't made yet". She went on with her complaints that she didn't want to pick any unless there would be a bunch of them and the garden needed another week to fully mature. She then pointed at six rows of peas and stated that she was glad I had planted RED hull peas rather than Purple cause the Purple weren't fit to eat. I explained that they were in fact purple. She went on to point out that this particular pea pod has been stung, yada yada yada. She went on to say that I SHOULD plant a such and such a pea like this other fella does. I said to myself, (well why don't you just take your fat a$$ over to his place and pay him $10 a bucket for the peas that I'm giving you), but I kept my mouth shut and just nodded my head and let the flogging continue. As the other two ladies continued picking peas this wretched beast continued to tell me what I should have or could have done then it dawned on me. The other two ladies who were happily filling up their buckets (3 bushels in less than 25 minutes) both had living husbands and this woman was a widow even though they were generally the same age. I suspect this is the WHY that Harvard could not quantify.
Tears came to my eyes as I envisioned his pitiful life with this wretched beast. I hoped he died sooner than average for his own sake. If he were a chain smoker and an alcoholic - I understood. If he died in a single car accident on a lonely stretch of road - I know the truth but won't tell it cause I understood. Suicide by hari-kari? Gosh I can only imagine the relief he must have felt as the cold steel cut through his spleen. Yes I understand. I can just see him looking up to heaven asking God to make him a place sooner than later.
Fellas, I am thankful that I have a good one but any of you that have one similar to this woman best go ahead and make out your wills and get things in order if you know what I mean.
