I had an old cow that was limping pretty badly so I got her in the feed lot and call the other farm for medication and assistance.
While I waited for them to arrive the cow walked right into the chute, so I closed the door behind her. Her head was not in the catch gate.
While I was talking to her I noticed she had a lot of flies on her beck, so I decided to spray her for flies.
As luck would have I took the sprayer out of my truck just that morning.
But I did have a little spray left in a 2 gal container I use to pore on the rubs.
And I found an old used washcloth in a trash bucket in my truck, so here I go.

I wet the washcloth with fly spray and proceed to wipe her back down.
While I was wiping her back the old girl turn her head around to watch me. I thought.
When I cam forward with the washcloth along her side she grabbed it and pulled it out of my hand.
After taking it entirely in her mouth, 3 chews and it was gone. I watched her swallow it.

Now that was at about 9AM and it wasn’t until about 3 PM that I cam up with a half way reasonable explanation why that cow ate my washcloth.

OK girls here we go, and remember I said “a half way reasonable explanation”, in other words it MAY be possible, and it is ONLY my opinion, which is not based in fact or any kind of scientific studies what so ever.
So don’t get your panties all in a knot over this one.

The last time a saw that washcloth was when I wiped my hands and arms with it after pulling a calf for my neighbor, which came into this world upside down and backwards. Needless to say I was afterbirth all the way up to my armpits after doing my famous rope dance.

Here ya go girl, get ready to pounce!
IMO the cow ate the washcloth because it smelled like afterbirth to her.

Darn glad I still didn’t have the same pants on that I was wearing when I pulled the calf.

Re:
so why didnt you wash the cloth or throw it away?
I did throw it away, it was in the trash bucket, but decided to recycle it instead of using a new one.
And if it passes I think I will recycle it again.

oh i see that now. he must have one of them newfangled heavy duty air fresheners.

Re:
hmmmmmmmmmm can you say gut blockage?
You got that right!
I checked her around 7PM and she still OK.
Time will tell.

If my assumption is correct, what gets me is that it wasn’t the smell of her own afterbirth. Have you ever seen a cow eat another cow’s afterbirth? I haven’t.

Yep. I have seen cows eat another cows after birth. It was this past winter as a matter of fact. This one cow calved and had hid her calf in the brush. She came to eat hay and then her and another cow went back and ate the after birth after they ate their hay.

Well that’s a new one on me.
Thanks

What do you think about me giving her a bottle on vegetable oil in the morning to help her pass it?
That’s what I was going to do if she goes off her feed.
She is about 15 YO and showing her age.
Any suggestions?

The good news is that it was one of those el cheapos from the dollar store.

Nope!
I just checked all her piles and no wash cloth.
I got a qt. bottle of Crisco Crnola oil this morning for her.
I really didn’t feel like fooling with her this morning and time was short, so when I put her feed in for her I poured a little on her feed to see what she would do. She ate it!
So I poured the whole bottle on her feed and she ate it all, thinking that should get her moving! It will probably be stuck to the wall come morning.
Stay tuned.

Sir Loin,
when you get it back, wash it in tide with bleech. It will come clean, and the color wont run.
A puddy knife, or windshield scraper should get it off of the wall.
Good luck,
J.D.

Only give oil via tube directly into the stomach...

...there is a chance that the oil given in the mouth can aid in the collection of "stuff" coughed into the lungs and stuck with oil which can turn into pneumonia...

Mineral oil is preferred, but Canola oil in a pinch on a heavy bloat will work as well.

Just my 2 cents...

Re:
And use mineral oil / not vegetable oil.
&
Only give oil via tube directly into the stomach...
Both of you are correct.
It’s just that I didn’t have time to run into town (40 min, roundtrip) and get mineral oil so I used the next best thing I had on hand.

Nope! No wash cloth yet but we have gone from a 4 inch slump poop pile down to a 1 inch slump poop pile. She is still discharging the cottonseed hulls she ate before her confinement. When I find corn and hay waste, which she has been eating since her confinment, hopefully I will find my washcloth.
Momma seems fine with it, so far.
Do you think I could get certified as a poopologist?

Curious to how many of you folks have ever seen a cow pass a rag or even bale twine. Thanks!

I have had a cow snatch a glove out my back pocket and eat it. The little electric marking flags, (wire with plastic) my cows eat those like candy. I spend all day marking out a new barn, the next day no flags, just wires stuck in the ground. Baling string, plastic bags, rocks, paper and caps off spray cans! Had one get into a bag of roofing nails with the plastic washers; no problems.

I'm sure your cow will be fine.

OK still no wash cloth and her foot seems fine
so I turned her back out with the herd.
