Is weaned weight required by Angus Association.

I recently bought 2 registered cows with bulls at their side. I don't have a set of scales yet and really have other things I'd rather buy right now. Do the assocaitions require I submit weaned weight or is it just good information to know. I plan to get the scales, but would like to wait a bit. Thanks.

Nah. The scales are not mandatory.

Scales may not be manadatory but I'd be willing to bet that the weights are.

cert

Weights are not mandatory with AAA. I think they should be (at least bw and ww).

I don't know Cert, my association does not make weaning weights mandatory for registration. Most breeds do not. Most don't require Birthweights either. They figure that no weight is better than a false weight, I guess.

Sorry about this Cert, but weights are not mandatory. I too think they should be and at some time in the near future they may be.
Frankie will probaly come in and give us the full scoop on the situation now.

I agree with the others here, the AAA doesn't require any weights be reported. I think it's a very good idea to do that. One of our local vets has a set of scales in his chute; I know some Angus breeders who collect WW there when they take their calves for shots. We have a set of scales that several smaller local breeders use, too.

Understand that EPDs are based on weights reported through the AHIR program. If you buy cattle without EPDs and don't report their weights, their calves won't have EPDs. Or the animal's "I"interim EPDs will stay Interim and their calves won't have EPDs.

I know it's a hassle, but if you're serious about making money on your cattle, I'd look around for some way to get it done. At the registered sales I attend, buyers will seriously discount cattle without EPDs.

Sorry guys. Hereford wants those weights. Guess I assumed Angus did too.
And this is something that can help one get ahead or behind the other.
Angus may be sitting on their laurels right now. You never know until it's to late and wonder what happened.

The Angus Association wants those weights, too, they just don't require them for registration. If you don't report them, after a generation or so you'll about be running commercial Angus cattle, price-wise.

I've seen registered Herefords sell that didn't have EPDs. Do they require weights for registration or only for EPDs?

THEY WANT THEM BUT DON'T REQUIRE THEM.

I have a Pinzgauer breeder as a neighbor. He does not have scales and does not weigh calves at any point. Although he turns no weights in, the breed association automatically puts the breed average on the registration paper.

I am only going by what he told but I think it's wrong. I had rather have no weights at all than have a false weight.

Weights should be mandatory for all breed assoc's, but the missing ones do not reflect on the EPD's of the ones who have weights.

I got my head beaten in for saying this is part of the problem with smaller breeders but will say it again.

Most smaller breeders do not have the facilities to properly asssimilate data on registered cattle.

Yes? I think every breed WANTS weights reported. Some breeds "require" it, but if you don't get it done, it's not a big deal.

And what happens if you don't report a WW?

The animal registration is classified as incomplete. Don;t know what the long term affects would be since we report WW and get new papers that doesn;t show them as being incomplete.

I don't know about Red Angus, but a neighbor bought a Hereford a few years ago. When the papers came in there were no EPDs. He called the Hereford Assn and was told that breeder didn't report weights, but the buyer could pay extra and get EPDs on the animal.

Some Associations say if you don't report a calf's weight on a cow, she falls off the registered rolls. But you can sell the cow and she's transferred to the new owner, who then has a year to report a calf. Or for a fee, you can re-instate her when she calves again. Or you could out and out cheat and say the calf died if you don't want to report a "bad" weight on the calf.

I report all weights because it's a benefit to my program. It helps identify my best cows, in addition to adding to the EPD database. But the THR programs that I'm familiar with only bring in more money for the Association without actually insuring accurate or complete data. People will find a way to cheat if they want to cheat and "requiring" data won't stop them.

I'd be glad to learn more about THR programs, though.

The AHA does not require the weights unless you are a Total Performance Records (TPR) breeder. Non-TPR breeders don't get EPDs on their registration papers, but can get them seperately for a fee. The customers of a TPR breeder get EPDs on their papers, and if a TPR breeder buys from a non-TPR breeder, the EPDs will appear on the new registration papers that are transferred to the TPR breeder.

The AHA registration form provides a BW spot for everybody, and most folks I know, even if they are not TPR, still report BW.

While I think it is a good idea to report all weights, and I do since I am enrolled in TPR, I don't think it should be mandatory. It just goes against the grain of a free country, and seems to me it would discourage new memberships. Some of those small breeders may get bigger some day.

# of cattle needing to be weighed doesn't bother me. I have to weigh one I might as well weigh them all. They all move thru the chute.

But that $100 bill I'm going to get from Hereford in a couple weeks...really chaps my ___! I'm one delayed registration paper from telling the association to shove it. Been nothing but a hassel for the last 5 years.

My commercial herd makes me more $$ and I enjoy guessing what color calf I'm going to get. Don't look for my name on any new registration applications in the near future.

That $100 bill irritates everybody I know in the Hereford business. It annoys my wife even more than it does me! :D :help:

The best way I know to deal with it is run for a leadership post, or nominate someone who will try to do something about it. I've nominated a friend the last two years who hates the fee. Last year, he received enough votes that he was an alternate delegate. Hope to get him all the way this year.
