I AI'ed a cow last month, and it was time for her to come back in at the end of the week. She is showing a discharge, but the bull seems to not recognize it. Usually he starts following the cow two days before she comes in. He grazes beside her the first day, then tries her occasionally the second. By the third day, they are together.
Could this be a false heat? Usually this cow will mount the others. She was eating at the hay tonight, and he was checking some the other cows. Her tail was out and he didn't even look at her walked past her and went and laid down by Ida.

Has anyone had this happen before?
 
Some of my cows have some mucous on the next heat date, when they're already pregnant. Sometimes the bull will do a bit of sniffing and look like he's interested, but then nothing more.

She could still come on in the next couple of days ...

Her tail was out and he didn't even look at her walked past her and went and laid down by Ida.

If her tail was out, maybe he bred her. Did you check the characteristics of her vulva? If it was pink, vascularized and moist with mucus, I would be concerned she came back in and he covered her. If he bred her, he made be finished with her and that is why he laid by Ida. I have seen this in cows running with the bull and turns out they got bred.

Good point. What sort of bull is he? A stick-by-them-constantly type or a laid-back done-and-gone bull? I have one of the latter: he'd do a cow once or twice and then he'd be off to get on with the rest of his day. I rarely saw him doing the business, but as he usually hung around with them for the previous couple of days, I generally had dates to go on.

You'll know in nine months, one way or the other.
 
If you know the bull's behavior pattern and he is not showing interest when he ordinarily would have, then i would trust the bull. The bull doesnt lie, i always say.
 
The bull stays with the cow two days before standing heat. He walks beside her two days before and grazes and moves when she moves. One day before standing heat, he stays with her, but tries her and she doesn't stand and he does a lot of licking her neck and such.
