I was just at the San Juan County Fair junior livestock show in New Mexico .During the fair it was learned that the San Juan County Extension Agent injected his sons steer with an anti inflammatory drug hours before it entered the beef judging class. It was determined by the fair board to be legal due to the drug with draw time was 0 days.He told the fair board the steer was injured during transport and 4 days later hours before the show he discovered the calf was hurt and with a vets permission and a legal prescription Injected the steer before it was showed. It is unclear if it was the calf that won Reserve Grand Champion or this other calf.
My question is Was this an UNETHICAL PRACTICE AND SHOULD THE FAIR BOARD HAVE KICKED HIM OUT FOR UNETHICAL CONDUCT.

The fair board had no idea he did this until the day after the show. The steer barn manager did know he gave the shot. The vet never examined the animal and know one in the barn ever noticed the animal limping. The fair board kicked him out of the fair along with another girl that gave her steer an oral dose given to her by a vet before the steer was on the fair grounds and the vet examined the steer.HE was reinstated the next day but the girl was not.The anti inflammatory drug she gave had a 4 day withdraw period. The fair has an zero tolerance drug policy that the man helped write.

Don't see a problem with it myself. Treatment of animals by a vet is common practice. Probably should kick him out had he not treated the animal.

I agree with Jo. If this was prescribed by a vet - I don't see how it could be an ethical issue. Unless you are questioning the vet's integrity - and that is a whole different can o' worms.

He disclosed all the information? You said he told the board. What do you think he was trying to hide? What rule was he trying to get around?

If someone medicated an animal and didn't disclose what had happened, that would not be ethical.

The simple fact that a county junior livestock show has to have a zero tolerance drug policy -- for the animals -- should be sufficient to prove that the whole thing defeated its own purpose a long time ago.

That is to say, who cares?

Snip snip
The fair has an zero tolerance drug policy that the man helped write.
My short answer is YES!
Where I come from zero means zero!!

And my long answer is:
I would be dang sure this story made the local paper, including every fair board members name and place of business and/or occupation so everyone who read it new exactly who has character and who doesn’t.
I would publicly castrate the entire fair board to be sure I got the right ones who don’t understand what zero means.

If the animal was injured enough to need medication it should have been withdrawn from the competition and taken home to recuperate.

Even if he thought it wasn’t serious enough to withdraw the animal he should have checked with the board first. He dang well knew better!!
Don’t let him get away with this BS, castrate the board publicly!!! And don’t back down, and don’t be polite about it!
Good luck

Zero tolerance doesn't mean no exceptions. Our fair has a zero tolerance policy, unless the drug is administered by a vet, and withdrawal time is over before they hit the packer. The barn manager knew. You don't have to take every issue before the board. The manager can decide if the entire fair board needs to be notified. Our fair board meets daily during the fair, this is where issues are brought up. Based on what's been presented, I think he acted properly. The girl should be banned if she did it on her own. Zero tolerance policies are assinine. Suspending kids from school because they forgot they had a plastic knife in their lunchbox, making kids remove the guns from little plastic army men, this is the problem with "zero tolerance". Most school administrators don't like these policies as it gives them no discretion.

well dont you think the man that helped write the drug policies should not be giving his steer shots before they enter the show ring.

First thing, we don't know what the policy says. We're going by a brief interpretation. Secondly, as I stated previously, there's nothing wrong with giving shots, if the animal needs it, and a vet is administering the medication, plus, if it's going to sell, you have to take into account the withdrawal time. For example, at our fair, you are not allowed to drench your animals. Again, unless done by a vet.

What if the shoe was on the other foot? Sounds like you got other issues with guy other than this. What did you place? I'm guessing second.

I dont care what place he took my problem is he is the county extension Agent and he got him self off but did nothing for the girl,he did not even try to help her.Is that the kind of agent you want in your fair and he helped write the drug rules.

I see absolutly nothing wrong with it. From your description, he did what was best for the animal. Was the steer truly injured, no one will ever know. I guess I don't see what you are so upset about.

So is this kids parent the county extension agent? How do you know that he didn't even try to help out the girl? It is still really puzzling me as to why you are so upset about this ordeal, other than maybe you are misinterperting the rule.

Hi everyone, Im new to this and stumbled onto this post.

What I find funny is that, the County extention agent, who should be very familure with the fair drug policy, chose to give any kind of injection before entering the show ring. As far as I know anti-inflamitory drugs are used to take swelling, stiffness and inflamation away and most fall into the steroid catagory. I now from personal experience that steers get stiff from being tied up all day. Just from what I read it sounds like cheating to me.
Why didnt he medicate the animal when he was first injured and if he was sooo injured why didnt anyone notice? What makes me think he is cheating is he gave the anti-inflamitory hours before going into the ring. Why didnt he try treating the animal days before? Sounds like an excuse to get an extra little advantage above his compitition.
I also have a comment on the vet.
Did the vet see the steer before giving permission to give the injection? Or is the extention agent real good friends with the vet? From your story it sounds like the little girl had an actual vet look at the animal and the extention agent did not? I may be reading more into the story, so please give me more details.

If you take note of how many times the original post has been edited you'll notice its an ever changing story so who knows. Still sounds like sour grapes to me. I don't know of any anti-inflamatory drug that will make any noticeable difference in show results. Just sounds like sour grapes to me. JMO

It depends on the show. Would what he gave the steer happen to be dexamethazone? My steer was injured during transport to Houston and we gave him a shot of it because it has a less than 24 hour withdrawel period. Well, I got second in my class and made $5,000 in the sale. Come about the time I was supposed to get my check, I got a letter in the mail saying I was disqualified and all my money was revoked. According to Houston, in their rules, which they so conviently changed that year, dex was considered a preformance enhancing drug. Go figure.

I AM FLOORED!
How could anyone make an un-educated comment like Jogeephus did. I think Jogeephus uses this web site to cause people problems. Midnightua1 has a valid problem. Just because Jogeephus doesnt have a clue doesnt mean the story has changed.
LOOK at the original post! Im sure there is more to this story than we see but that does not give you the right to take this persons problem and turn it into an ugly mess. This story is writen to ask a specific question, without the writer adding their opinion to it. Unlike Jogeephus who we all can see is full of his own opinion.
Go somewhere else! You have proven by your last comment that your ignorant to the drug pollicies let alone treating animals in a show setting. Regardless of how or why the animal is hurt, you should not be treating the animal with Rx drugs and still be allowed to show. If the animal in question was soooooooo hurt, why did it take "four days and hours before showing," before it got tx.This fair had a zero drug policy! The writer said the county extention agent helped write it. GET A CLUE! Sooooooo dont tell me he didnt understand the rules.

Jogeephus, I am going to TRY and I repeat TRY to educate YOU, "if thats possable." Any anti-inflamitory drug will, and I repeat WILL change the physical apparance in a show ring. Ill give you the first clue.
Maybe the drug took the pain away (go figure, anti-inflamitory) from the animal and now it can walk better, or maybe the animal in question was NOT HURT at all and because these show animals spend a lot of time tied up, the animal had stiff joints (what animal doesnt, but this agent had the power to fix his and get away with it.) Either way its evedent you dont and are not willing to help this person so Keep your un-educated opinion to yourself!

Midnightua1, I feel for you. It sounds like there is foul play here. I would like to help. Any and all information you can give us can only help you and others. Im sure I dont speek for myself when I say, "dont give up." Don't let the title County Extention Agent scare you. That person my think they are above the rules, but with help from EDUCATED people on this post maybe we can help. It sound to me like you are trying to help the girl? Is this true? Is she related to you?

I agree with Sir loin, don't let them get away with it!
By any chance does your fair have a policy on vet vs owner administration of RX legal or illegal drug use? Our fair does.

I also am puzzled on the fact that there was a zero drug use policy, how did the extention agent get around this? Any drug with or without a withdrawl period should not be used. Why was the girl kicked out and not him? This is the question!
It sounds like an abuse of power to me.

P.S.
Jpgeephus- 2nd place "is" reserve grand champion, maybe you should go to a fair and check it out sometime.

Jogeephus, I'd just as soon you stick around. Drag up a chair, I'll buy you a cup.

Gee willackers. I thought the rain this morning was going to bring a bright new day and be better than yesterday.

Midnightua1 or Showsteerup or whatever you are calling yourself at this moment, I do go to the shows as I have been a supporter for several years. You came on this board asking for opinions If This Was Cheating and I gave you my opinion. When many saw nothing wrong you changed the details of your post again and again trying to build support. For what. Seems the folks in charge of the show have made their decision as well so they must be idiots just like me. Or maybe we are all taking kick-backs or this is some grand conspiracy against you.

What exactly did they give the calf. Cortizone? Yeah, its a steroid. Might have even been a derivitive under the name Dexamethasone or many other names. Do you think that one shot overrode the months of preparation prior to the show? Do you not worm your cattle? Isn't this a drug? Come on, lets not split hairs here. I seriously doubt the judge is so unqualified he cannot make a decision based on the attributes of the calf.

Now if you had asked about things you can do when things don't go your way. I think you would have gotten some pretty good suggestions on this board. I for one would suggest going to each of the committee members homes and standing in front yard and jumping up and down and screaming like a spoiled young un. But I would have never thought about creating fictitious people who can "stumble onto the post" and agree with you - that's good. **scratching head wondering if this has ever been tried before**

Matter of fact, just keep changing the details of your original post and use buzz words like "blind little girl" or "minority child" and heck before you know it I'll be in your corner to.

Get over it or keep changing your original post and like I said, I'll eventually agree with you. Remember to use the buzz words though and no plagerism.

Oh heck. It is really not worth having an opinion if its going to agree with the committee's and not yours. OK. You are right. It was wrong, wrong I tell you. There should be a full fledged investigation and all parties should be strung up by there toes and beaten senseless with a wet carp then poked with a cattle prod. How dare they.

Happy Now?!? I am. I'm so glad I'm on your side aren't you!!!!
