Has anyone here used any of the invisible dog fences that don't use buried wires? Looks like there are two types that I can find, one that uses a circular pattern with a variable radius and another where you can program a zone for your dog to stay in - can be any shape you want. Mainly interested in the latter but would like to hear opinions of any of them.

What brand would you recommend? Stay away from?

Reliability?

I used the pet safe radius type fence with my dogs and they worked great as long as the dog was properly trained to the fence. As far as reliability I only had a dog get out with good batteries once. A deer ran through the yard and she ran through it after her.
 
Personally I've never tried them but from watching my parents' struggles I'd say that if you can't get the dog to figure out what the boundaries are ahead of time and use it for reinforcement only you're probably wasting your time. They've used it with all of their dogs but the only ones that really responded well to it didn't need it in the first place. For the rest of them the best result was that when they heard "YIIIPE!" they knew so and so was travelling again. :D

Thats where the proper training comes in to play. I had my basset hound and blue heeler trained in a long afternoon apiece. I worked with my hard headed border mix every eveing a for a week before she ever learned how the fence worked.

I have one for a Rottie and it works well for him. He even freaks out when you take his collar off and try and get him across the imaginary line.
 
We used one a few years ago with great results. I put the collar on, used no flags, and the next morning the dog was on the wrong side of the fence. I shut the unit off, led him back to the right side of the fence and never a problem after with him crossing. two things to keep in mind. First a long haired dog might need to have his hair trimmed at first. Second once the unit is working well check the collar periodically as a sore can develop and you can forget it's even on. We had a St. Bernard. farmguy
