Inhumane treatment?

Just got back in from China last night. While near Shenzhen, China I saw the strangest form of cattle transportation. Or should I say "water buffalo" transportation because that is what the hauler was transporting. The truck was an 18 wheeler type. The trailer was open about midways up with bars crossing over the top. The buffs all had holes punched through their septums and a length of twine ran through their nose and tied off to the bars crossing over head. Their heads were pulled up at a steep angle (nose pointing to sky) and their chest was butted up against the rump of the animal in front of them. They were stacked in this way about 4 wide and 7 or 8 deep. Blood was pouring out their noses onto the backs of the animal in front of them from the septums being torn when the truck swayed and their bodies shifted. I usually do not make it a point to judge treatment of animal but I will say that no animal of mine would ever be treated that way. Even if it is his last ride and he is going to die anyway. What say you all?

I agree Wholeheartedly Hoss. The dogooders in this country should see how animals are treated in other countries. But Chinese treat their own people cruel.

It isn't something that I would like to see. It sounds pretty cruel. Good thing they don't have animal rights activists over there. I think they are still trying to work out the whole human rights thing.

I would say this is cruel. Deferent world over there. But anyone that can throw their own babies in the river definitely will see things different than me.

The Chinese have been taught under the communist sytem that there is not much value in a single life but what is best for the society as a whole is what is valued. I have seen people die on the street from car wrecks several times and just have the paramedics stand around and watch them die because their injuries would have been permenant (broken back, paralysis) and the burden of their care would have been on the government i.e the "people". The best interest of the "people" was put above the life of an individual. A detestable system to say the least.

That being said.....the Chinese are some of the friendliest people that I have met. Overall they want what we want....to live, work and succeed. It is terrible that the goverment's communistic system will not allow it.

I don't know if its all communist thought. Father-Inlaw was in the CBI theater during WW II. Chinese he worked with had no medics. If you were wounded and could not keep up you were left behind. It was you're fate. So they thought. He said they saved a lot of chinese. Sounds like they treat there animals with the same thought. (no respect for life).

Exactly! We eat cattle but not dogs (that we'll admit anyway). Other cultures eat dogs and roof rabbits (cats) but won;t eat cattle. People around here are all crazy about not eating horses, other cultures eat them and like it. It's not half bad either.
People in the citys think that branding and castrating is cruel.
Who are we to impose our beliefs/standards on others?

And something else about the first post, about the water buffalo being treated "inhumanely", Well the practice of them using water buffalo as transportation, and the way they treat their buffalo (whether other people like it or not), has been going on a whole lot longer than America and our American cultures were even thought of...it's just their way of life

So, as you said Dun, we have no right to impose their way of life, just because it may seem strange to some of us

By the way, Good post Dun

Cultural existence is a relative term when compared to what is acceptable.

The old TV show "Green Acres" is a classic example.

My comment and opinion was not "imposing" my belief on anyone. "Imposing" would have been if I had stopped this truck and berated the driver for the practice. It is their buffalo and they can treat them how they see fit. I was simply stating the fact that I would not treat my cattle this way. How it could have been interperated that I was imposing on anyone is beyond me. :x

The comment wasn't directed at you specificaly but those that feel that other cultures ways of doing things are wrong because they are contrary to our culture.

I was just using your post about the water buffalo as an example, not trying to say whether you were or weren't imposing their culture, just trying to state the fact that what you thought of as inhumane was probably perfectly normal for all of the locals...and I wouldn't treat my cattle that way either, but that is because we are fortunate enough to have vehicles that actually work, we dont have to find ways of using buffalo as transportation

By the way Hoss, did you take any pictures while you were in China? Hope you had a good time there

What the USA is all about is imposing or standards on how to treat people and on a lesser level animals. We have went to war and put out troups just for how governments were treating there people. Being an American and saying we don't do this is hypocritical and why alot of other countries don't like us. What ever the Governments forighn policy is is what the people of the other countries think of us. Point being our country has been imposing it's will for a long time, just hopefullynoe religiously, that is what this country is about.

NamVet, thanks for the clarification. I am sorry for misunderstanding it. I didn't take any pics this time since this is my 20th trip or so. I did post some pics on another thread a month or so ago if you want to do a search.

I look at it like I do my sisters problem with the folks, she is boohooing all the time about how the won't stay out of her life, always telling her what she should and should not do......And does not like it that they do not treat me that way.

I explained to her if she was not always borrowing money, getting mom to babysit 30 hours a week, using their cell phone accounts, borrowing their cars because theirs do not run or have tags then they would leave her alone like they do me.

The world likes us to fund everything, they like us to police things at their convenience. They want us to bail them out every-time Germany decides to invade. When Tsunami's hit, when they can not keep their pants zipped in Africa to control Aids. Maybe if we were not having to be so involved in all their crap, then maybe we would not do so much imposing of our will upon them ;-)

I don't much care for you...and you don't much care if I do...and that's cool. However...ah, man....I hate saying this...but your analogy about your sister does have a ring of truth.

The thing is, it's your sister, your family...not the entire world with all of the different cultures and races and religions. What would you do, Aplusmnt, if it were left up to you...if you were the leader of the greatest, most powerful nation on the ENTIRE earth? Would you go ahead and act on your experience in re: your sister, or would you try to find out what certain things meant to cultures and races and religions that you had never known about...before you hit the red button?
