Imposible?

One of my new cows calved this morning. I was expecting her to calv in sept. I bought her as a cow calf pair in Jan and was supposed to be bred back 2 months bred. Her first calf was supposed to been born last sept, I forget the date will check tomorrow. But, I think it was like the 7th or so. Well, any way, this would mean she calved again in exactly 9 months. I am thinking no way. Did the seller get his dates wrong on the birthdate? However, the first calf does not look like she is a year old. BTW = I have called him twice and still have not received my papers on them. Some of you more experienced cowmen ever have a cow calve 9 months after giving birth? Also, the calf seems just fine. Not premature looks to be about 75 lbs. You guys let me know what you think. Thanks.

You need to be counting in days. 282 days, add 10 for Brahman. 9 months is not far off. Unless one is watching closely then it is within bounds for estimating.

Ok, I was off on the dates a little. Her first calf was born on 8/28/09. 2nd calf on 6/13/10. It was a quick turn around. I thought a year was fast.

That is 289 days. Very small chance she would get bred that fast after calving but I suppose anything is possible. It usually takes a couple weeks for the uterus to contract and everything to get cleaned out and reset for the next pregnancy.

Yes, registered. Well, I am going to wait a 2 weeks then put her with MY bull and see what happens next year. I will have the dates. LOL. I took some pics today of the new calf, but was right before sunset and did not turn out so well. Will get some better pics manana.

Normally you would expect for the cow to have some downtime before becoming fertile again...But with horses, for example, the best time to rebreed the is 8 days after birth. It's called a "foal heat", and I've bred many Arabians like this. The foal heat is actually stronger than normal heats.

Maybe your cow thinks she's a horse? If she repeats this she will constantly be moving her birth date up unless you keep the bull seperated.Wouldn't it be nice to have three calves every two years like goats/sheep do?

yes it is possible .......

but more likely the seller who has not yet taken care of business with you.....

failed to take care of business with his records as well and most of what you know about the calf is a guestimation at best.

I have had cows calve at ten month intervals. bred thirty days after calving. nine months is a stretch. not impossible by any means but I think something else is hinky.

If you bought the cow in January and have not received the registration papers, chances are you will never get them.

Did you actually see the papers? If not, the cattle may be grade.

you just learned how fast some beefmasters breed back.i bought a cow that calved 2-28-07.an she was exposed back to the bull.then she calved 1-4-08.thus backing her calving date up 7 wks.she waited about 60 to 75 days before she bred back with the 3rd calf.

This could be a problem. It could be nothing.

If the cow is 'bottle teated' it is heriditary and will get worse every year.

It means that her teats are too big for a newborn calf to suck. She then doesn't produce enough milk because the calf has not been sucking properly. You will find that the calf does not grow and looks too young for its age.

Because the right amount of milk is not being produced the cow goes back into calf very quickly, as the calf is effectively 'weaned'.

Eventually one year the new born calf will not survive without intervention from you. This cow and her heifers should be culled.

We have 2 heifers here at the moment. We have culled the mother. The older heifer is singled out for the next one for the freezer. The other heifer still looks like a calf but is actually much older.

It is not something you can really tell in a heifer. You won't know until after a few calves usually.

You can tell by looking at the size of the teats on the udder, if they are much wider than all your other cows you have a problem.

If the teats are normal size then everything should be fine and you can revel in having a cow that produces lovely calves for you.

it is very possible that the cow would calve that soon. i have seen them come in 13 days after calving and stick. they can also calve up to 2 weeks before/after the due date. about the papers it may take a month or more to get them transfered. it is possible that the breeder did get the date of birth off a little or mixed up with another calf. if you get the papers it should tell the exact info. we bought a bull at judd ranch sale and when we got the papers, 6 weeks later, his name was not what was in the catalog, everything else was right. everybody makes a misprint or mistake every once in awhile

i had a cow calve monday that bred back in 75 days or less.she has an ave of 350 day CI on 3 calves.i have another cow thats heavy springing.an she calved in oct 20 2009.she has been calved 8 months an she is heavy springing now.so that means she bred back on her 1st heat.

We have a cow - now 11 years old , angus x - that had a calf every 9 months and 2 weeks. She did this till we started our 2 seasons instead of 1 season. She also weaned 600+ calves with Big teats, her daughter has smaller teats and weans good calves as well.

Not impossible !!! I had a hereford cow years ago that gave birth to a calf mid March- while I was still feeding the bulls with the cows- and that fall she gave birth to a heifer calf on Christmas Eve....
I still have that heifer (now about 10 years old) as she became a pet and the kids called her Chrissy....
My Vet said that some cows will come back in heat just a few days after calving just like a mare does with a "foal heat"...Its not usual for them to get bred- but it can and does happen....
