Just talked to my son and he tells me his roommate is travelling to India to volunteer his services for six months on a farm under a program they call Wwoofing. His roommate will pay his own way over there and work for no money in exchange for the "experience". I am such a fool to have been taken by so many people over the years with me paying them for the "experience". No more. Now I'm going organic. Going to build a tepee out of palmetto fronds and bamboo for the housing and I'll be in business. On second thought, I'll let them build their own tepee.

I have heard that one of the grazing specialist in VA is already doing that. He writes books, gives speaches while people pay for the learning experience.

Is he a grazing specialist or a marketing specialist. ;-)

Oh, I forgot to mention this fella organized a boycott of a local grocery store because the field workers had to work in inhumane conditions. No air conditioning and they worked outside in the sun all day. I think this boy is fixing to learn something about life. :lol2:

I went to India about 4 years ago. The armpit of the world. If he doesn't have real grit he will be back within a couple of weeks. Nasty, dirty, stinky and HOT place.

Sounds like he needs to learn a lot about life.
But I don't see how they can learn much only working five hours a day. :(

Get you a herd of grey Brahmas Jo--you will have a waiting list of India's finest just waiting for the chance to work on the sacred cattle ranch..Don't forget to get ya one of those red or black dots to stick on your forehead Jogephus.

This is one of those events in life where it brings joy to the heart of a Life Spectator like myself. I plan on keeping in touch with this young man through my son. I seriously doubt he will pull the whole tour and suspect when he sees his first calous on his hand he will take an emergency flight back to the states to get it seen about. I will get to know him better in the next month because my son - with his big heart - has taken it on himself to bring him home after school ends so we can teach him how to use hand tools because my son had to teach him how to use a shovel on Arbor Day.

I also doubt his true resolve to this because it is his girlfriend who is the driving force behind this trip. She is .....um .... let's just say "special" and leave it at that.

hole diggers and a hammer are the only tools I would let him use while put up a mile of barb wire 7 strands.

There is a guy here who I went to high school with many moons ago. He has organic chickens. He sells in the farmers markets up in Seattle ($6 a dozen for eggs and $5 a lb for fryers... all free range of course). He always has a young man or two working for him in exchange for room and board and the learning experience.

Another boat I am missing.........

Dave I'm thinking the same thing. What natural resources do you have available to build teepees with?

M5, I have a half acre garden and a hoe that should fit his hand perfectly.

Jo be sure to teach him the difference between weeds and the plants in the garden beofre you turn him loose with a hoe in a garden!! Might come back to find no garden left or else all the weeds left and plants gone. Apparently I do not live close enough to a large city full of idiots to get free labor or in on all these good marketing deals. You east and west coast people should be rolling in the money from all the idiots out by all of you. Better work on your marketing plans.

I think the further out in the boonies the better. That way they can't tuck tail and run off in the middle of the night. :lol2:

Good Idea, with a garden that size a suspect you have a couple of old hoes that have the big handle that runs through ring in the head and its about 5 inchs wide. I made the mistake one time of picking that hoe when we were hoeing citerns in soybeans.

joe, if you have an old hoe that the blade is broken weld you a sickle mower blade on the stem. alot easier to work with good for detail work.

Sounds like a good design. I found a hoe in a barn that is over 100 years old. This hoe is fantastic. Its small and razor sharp. The handle had long rotted away but I fixed that. It is a thing of art for sure. And yes, I know the big hoe you speak of. I have one and I suspect it will be a hundred years before I ever pick it up to use it unless its to mix concrete.

Why don't you open up a organic mud spa down in the swamp. Get your swamp heifers, and beavers ran out, and you'll be ready for business.
