Ih574 versus Allis 6060

Well...I bought a diesel 574 today. Driving it without the loader on it and no attachments it felt alot stronger than my gasser. High range first gear actually felt usable where as the gasser pretty much have to be going downhill to use it.
Ran it with a 6 foot finish mower while test driving and it felt good.
I have a bunch of hay to mow in the next couple weeks so we will see how it does.

Assuming he is talking about turning up the fuel pump. To do that properly you need a pyrometer to keep an eye on EGT's especially with a N/A diesel too much fuel and they get hot in a hurry.

Yes, a pyrometer is a good idea, but a 5% increase isn't going to make drastic changes... Keeping an eye on the smoke color can give you an idea of if you're overfueling badly too.

Working on a 40 year old tractor you have no idea if somebody before you has already adjusted the "smoke screw", so turning it up 5% may end up being 10 or 15%+ over stock. Over fueling a N/A is easy to do and can get expensive in a hurry.

Last spring I rebuilt a ford 3000 for a neighbor after he gave the fuel screw a half turn then worked it hard, (mind you it never really smoked) but it surely melted down two pistons. After rebuilding I put a pyrometer in and the EGT's would easily climb past 1400 degrees without really working the tractor. Put it on a dyno and backed the fuel screw out over a full turn before it got into the safe area. (that means before my neighbor even touched it the tractor was "turned up").

Yep - some dealers offering demos are notorious for turning them up and often forget to readjust afterwards.

If it's got the plumbed wires on the adjusters it's probably in stock form

I've turned 3 of my tractors UP on the dyno and all 3 have the wires still on the caps. Keeps them from rattling loose and makes it look stock if I go to the county fair tractor pulls....

And I'm sure I'm not the only one that has done that.

Meh, toss a turbo on it and throw more fuel at it!
A pyrometer is never a bad idea when doing this, there's no argument there, even if it's a temporary one for tuning purposes.

I'm gonna try to mow with it soon and see how it does. So far I'm more than happy with the power. As long as I'm happy with the way it runs the disc mower, then I'll go ahead and swap the loader over to it. Feels like a good investment so far.

I mowed about 15 acres with the diesel 574 today. It feels so much more powerful than my gas 574 that I don't see how they could be rated the same unless my gasser is so worn out that it's lost most of its power. I'm very happy with the diese so far.
