I raise commercial cattle. Just sharing some dna results if anyone is curious. These are some of the dna profiles I received in October. My walking sire is out of Sunnyslope Odyssey H71 AAA# 18944850. Normally bull calves are castrated, but I think there's enough hay & yard space to raise them for the 2025 bull sale.


BROWN is the only AI calf listed - out of Thomas Jefferson AAA# 18359581. He got the dilute gene from his dam. She is a diluted red heifer I have posted on CattleToday. He is tough to work thru the chute as reflected in his docility score. BROWN will be castrated.

6271 will be castrated. The #8 birthweight and #3 calving ease scores are a hard no.

8459 will remain intact. He has a #7 birthweight, but his calving ease is still average. Not a heifer bull in my opinion. His carcass scores are killer - Marb 8, Rea 9, Tend 10.

6263 is borderline, but will remain intact. I don't like the #7 tenderness, but with his low birthweight and #7 yearling weight I feel he has something to offer as a heifer bull.

I didn't go through it in detail but I like what I see. I hope some thing like this becomes mainstream. It's time to get to the nut cutting on this stuff and start charting based on performance regardless of breed.

Common sample types are hair, blood or tissue. There is a $3 hair processing fee for beef, but not for dairy. I started out doing hair samples and changed to tissue sample units a couple years ago. I'll refer you to their website for pricing.

Neogen can put you in touch with your local rep. I've heard it is possible to get free sampling supplies from the rep, but I've never received any. If you can't get free supplies from Neogen, then try testing with Zoetis. I know Zoetis reps will provide free TSUs.

Neogen has many locations and that has been confusing for me to do business with them. DNA processing or sample questions should be directed to the Lincoln, Nebraska office. Billing or account questions go thru corporate in Lansing, Michigan. Equipment or vet supplies ship out of Kentucky. The KY computer system is different than NE, but corporate seems to have access to everything. That's my experience doing business with them.

I wasn't aware that Igenity Beef was also for bulls, I have been using Zoetis Inherit Select, they will only do DNA on replacement cows or heifers, you can submit a sample from a bull for Inherit Connect, but that is only used for parentage verification.

What I've discovered is that it is easy to move the needle quickly for the highly heritable carcass traits, the other traits take a few generations to really make a noticeable improvement. Keep your own performance records because I'm not convinced that they have everything figured out on reading and interpreting the genome.

We use igenity beef here too. A bit confusing but Neogen has been great to deal with and very helpful. Keep our own replacements out of commercial herd. Just use it on bulls we keep. Works good for deciding which bulls to use where and which to send down the road. So far it’s been very good on identifying bulls for the heifer pen. Moses your numbers look not too shabby

Thanks for posting these! We have American Aberdeen's and they don't use EPD's yet but I've been using Igenity beef profiles since I've been using them. We're still not where we should be yet but every year we improve. Thanks for the info on talking to the rep about samples too ;)
