Here are a couple of 4 month old steer calves that we are considering for 4-H this fall. They are not definite picks yet, but we will likely keep one or the other unless something else really impresses us by weaning.

So far the first one is my pick, they are half brothers. What do you think? Any major flaws in either one?? I realize the pictures of the first steer are better than the second, but I couldn't get #2 to co-operate.

I personnaly like 1 better. He looks pretty long and's got a nice straight back, Nice rear end on both, but a little more muscle on #1. from the pictures #2 looks like his front legs are really short. It could be the way he's standing though.
Thats just one persons oppinion.

1 looks to be the showier, flashier steer, but they are both nice.

#2 looks deeper sided, deeper flanked, heaver muscled and bigger footed to me, # 1 has some leather to him as well but it could be the pictures alot easier to pick in person

I agree. I think 1 and 2 would be nice to show as a pair of steers. They both compliment each other. 2 in my opinion is deeper throughout his flank and longer bodied. I like 1 thickness, and he could grow longer as he matures. I think 2 has a leveler hip than 1 but it could just be the picture. Also it may be the picture but 1 could have a questionable top (the fuzzness of the hair makes is difficult to tell for sure.) I still like 2.

If I’m correct in my assumption that picture 1 and 2 are the same calf, it is amazing how a picture can change the look, I did not like the look of the calf in p1 but like the calf in p2. Calf #2 looks like he might be a little to straight in the front again could just be the picture. They both have a little leather up front. How old are the calves, you might be better off not deciding until you have them weaned, after 3 months old the go through that awkward looking stage for awhile. After they are weaned and on feed it might be easier to make your decision.

yes it is the same pic. there are 2 pictuers of each calf. so there are 4 pictuers. i like #1

You are correct, I edited to show that there is only 2 different calves.

The calves are both approx 4 months old.

We definitely won't be deciding which one until October so they will be about 7 months of age by then. They won't both go on feed here, as the one we decide against will go to market with the rest of our calves.

Wow, it is pretty much 50/50 for either calf. That is interesting, considering the pics of the roan calf are much better than the pics of the spotted calf. They are both pretty good calves, but we can only take one of them into 4-H.

The blue cow's calf is the #1 calf. The other is out of a red roan cow. If we go up there again this year we will look for you.
