Silver you have me to researching the temp that salt water will freeze. Its around 0-F according to the density of the salt. Maybe its because of the area the jug displaces that it doesn't freeze. All I know in several years I have used it i haven't chopped ice.

I was wondering if an unfrozen liquid in a jug might be more likely to bob around a bit more than one with solid ice in it. Also wondering if a dark coloured object might absorb more heat from the sun during the day. It's got my curiosity up and I'm going to do some Googling lol

You bring up a great point. What comes in a dark colored jug? I'm sure that would be even better.

The idea that the proximity to the saltwater somehow keeps the freshwater from freezing is a myth. However, the floating bottle does agitate the surface which helps prevent and ice skin from forming and horses can push the bottle down with their nose to break a hole in the iced over tank.

Myth busted? Well, sort of… the saltwater bottle does work well to prevent stock tanks from icing over, but not necessarily because of the salt. It works in the same way as any floating object would, by agitating the surface of the water. A partially filled saltwater bottle does float especially nicely in the tank and is more difficult for horses to remove than a lighter bottle.

So all my salt is doing is keeping the water inside from freezing and allows it to move around more inside which agitated the water?
 
Yep, we do the salt water in the jug thing too. Have for several years and it probably is because the cows will "play with it" more. But the salt does help to keep the water in the jug from freezing so it is more buoyant. I believe that the salted water not freezing does keep it more agitated. It floats better than non salt water in a jug. We tried both one year as a friend challenged me on the temp thing. Since salt water freezes at a lower temp, the salt water inside will slosh around more than plain water.... and so the animals will play with it more. Never heard of it when I lived up north... took a good ole southerner to teach me that.... Thanks Jimmy....
 
Ask your vet if he has any empty iodine jugs.... they are usually dark brown. My black tubs will warm up quicker and melt faster around the edges even on cold days if the sun is out. So then, the salt water inside will get warmer, which will help to warm the water directly around the bottle..... I used a couple of blue antifreeze jugs one year, they don't float as well but being blue they got warmer than the clear jugs.
 
My heart goes out to anyone calving in this! We get brutal weather, but generally only for a couple days. This time it looks like it's going to last at least the next 9 days. So thankful I pushed calving back to first of March. I did have one well house that froze; didn't have the heater inside turned up enough and the heat tape on the outside pipe came loose around the elbow. Got the inside thawed out enough I could attach a hose to fill the tank and repositioned the tape so hopefully the ice in the pipe will have melted by the time I head back out.
 
It's pretty brutal out there for an okie. Idk how people up north do it all the time. Heck I couldn't keep the ice off the truck this morning! We have basically just started this cold spell and I'm ready for summer!! 9 days? Uck!!
Just enough ice to make it miserable. Should be easy enough to put hay out tho. Dont see it melting off any time soon.
 
20% salt by weight will take the freezing point down to 2 F. Going much over 20% will cause crystals to form and just waste the extra salt. So use 1 lb salt to 2 quarts of water (4 lbs water). Use a measuring cup and add just slightly under 1 cup of rock salt or table salt to get 1 lb.
 
Back roads here in MO are just a sheet of ice. Where the state has salted it's not so bad, the highways are mostly clear.

I'll take a foot of snow over freezing rain. I hate the stuff.

Looks like we've got a stretch of 10 days or so below freezing. Unusually cold for this area, Saturday night supposed to be -10.
 
Yes, but just because it's not frozen does not mean that the fluid in the jug is not below the freezing point of unsalted water.
Yep. And it depends how much salt is added to the water in the jug, that is, how saturated (with salt) the jug's water is. At maximum saturation, (% salinity) the water in the jug won't freeze until the temperature goes below zero. Salt fully saturated water (23.3% salt) freezes at about -21C (-6F). The fresh water surrounding the jug will definitely freeze far before that -6F is reached.
