Mother nature sure can throw you some curves at times. Just got the electric back on been off for 5 days. Lost most of the big trees around the house from the ice storm.

Columbus KS looks like a tornado went through the town with telephone poles snapped and trees down everywhere.

I never realized how much damage just ice alone could do.

Nice to see how people step up to help people though. My little kids been working at a shelter to feed and house the homeless. There has been no shortage of food or help.

Funny thing is though, and not to talk bad about them, but once they combined all shelters into school Gym and Red Cross took over things really changed. I know Red Cross does lots of good but local families helping each other is the best of the best. Food was better, help was better etc.....

Only good thing about disasters is the watching of neighbors helping each other. Sharing homes, generators, food, tractors, chainsaws. Makes a person have a hope for mankind! Also makes you count your blessing to live in the Midwest and small community were you do not have the problems you see in the large Cities when disasters hit.
 
Aplusmnt I don't mine saying this at all the RED CROSS sucks. Most of the money they get never goes to help anyone. My Dad watched them try to sell a cup of coffee and a sandwich to troops during World War II for a dollar after they had been behind enemy lines for 3 months and cut off from supplies. That was untill a Captain pointed a machine gun at them and said either give it away for free or he would shoot everyone of them.
I also have watched their generosity during Katrina and believe me when I say I do not care for their style of help. Well I have probably said to much so I'll get off my stump.

Thanks Aplus, sorry that you had to go through this but I guess we all need to be reminded that we are not in charge of everything. Isn't it great to live where neighbor will help neighbor?

I agree 100%...My Dad had no respect for the Red Cross after the war...One of the jobs they were assigned to do was assist in notifying families about wounded soldiers-but the first my grandmother knew that my Dad had been wounded or was even alive is when the Red Cross SENT THE FAMILY A BILL for the blood that had been given him :shock: Finally when he was well enough- a Salvation Army worker helped him write a letter home- the first they knew that he had been unconscious/semi concious for 2 months in hospitals in New Guinea and Australia....
Dad would donate regularly to the Salvation Army- but wouldn't give a dime to the Red Cross....

Yes it is! That was my main point, not so much to rag on the Red Cross. Seems on TV every time there is a disaster you see the bad (example: Katrina) but it is nice to see how small country communities come together to help each other.

Another side point is in the wake of the Iraq war, every time we see a disaster the National guard is brought up about being spread thin. Well within like two days we have the national guard here, they have brought generators to help get some of the small towns up and running. They have powered the school gym to allow a shelter for those with no heat. It showed that the local and state resources are there if needed and used properly.

Funny things is on the food deal, the ladies that were in charge of shelter food before the Red Cross took over set up at another location feeding the National Guard Soldiers with good home cooked meals and deserts. I heard some people at the Red Cross shelter had to eat MRE's while the soldiers were getting some serious good home cooking!
 
The sad part is that the community feling won;t last much past the time things get back to normal. People will pull togehter when there's a problem but go back to the old ways shortly after it's resolved.
 
It's always heartwarming to see people jumping in and helping a neighbor in need.And that's the way it's supposed to be.
Then we have looters that like to kick you when you are already down. Should be open season on looters.
