I have owned and drove diesel pickups for yrs
but for the last week I have been driving and pulling with a Duramax and I will be the first to say that I have never driven a truck that pulls better or drives as easy under loaded conditions as the Duramax
I hauled 6 loads of hay, 17 bale pr load weighing 900lbs pr bales on a 25ft tandem dual trailer in some rough a$$ country this week and the Dmax just walked away with it like it wasn't even there
on 1 hill the Ford and dodge that were in front of me slowed down so much that I had to stop midway in the hill(long steep grade) and I thought to myself oh $hit I am going to have to back down to get took off when they finally got out of the way I just push down on the throttle (didn't smash it to the floor) and the Dmax just took off and kept gaining speed all the way to the top

Then I loaded 10-700lb hfrs and 4 cows in a 20 ft steel trailer and hauled them 280 miles and the truck drove and handled like it was empty

So you boys can brag and talk about your trucks all you want but if ALL the Duramax's drive and pull like this one then you are ALL just BLOWING SMOKE AND WISHING as I have drove ALL kinds of diesel pickups and this one beats them hands down

I can answer the transmission question, it had a automatic because thats all you can get with the Duramax. The Duramax pulls hard to 65-70 mph, after that my Cummins pulls harder. Thats a 06 Dmax compared to a 11 Dodge with a 6 speed, pulling 14-4x5 bales. The Dmax rides better and is more comfortable to drive. Thats my :2cents:

Actually one of my neighbors has one of the early Duramax's with a 6 speed in it.

They've got the power and run great, but I just can't see that suspension holding up to a bale bed or feed duty. Plus the frigging frames on those things are about 6" off the ground. Great paved road trucks.

yeah man nothin wrong wit them chevys..im a dodge man cuz i want a real front axle but if i drove a serious pickup everyday for commuting or needed a good comfy nice looking truck for the wife id fer sure git me a dura...they kill em on the farms round here..overall i think theyre kinda soft but theyre dang good trucks if ya aint gonna try to do oil rig work or nothin

Dang I guess Jed and all them farmers in the Delta must make enough money to buy new trks every year if they are that soft
oh wait this one is an 06 and is used on the farm everyday and I think it is the newest one out there as most are in the late 90s they must be plumb wore out ;-)

im just saying..they bent the frame after the rear wheel humps towing stuff with em...these guys are corp farmers and they just run em to death...the guys that work em tell me the interiors are junk in 6 mos...and they are soft offroad..jus sayin..i still like em

Mines a 2010 with 70k on it. It does everything I could want and more. It's a 2500HD 4x4 with Allison, I hauled a small Dozer (load was about 30k) the other day for 60 miles with no trouble at all. And hauling hay, like AC said, I haul 14 5x6s the last two years 40 miles per trip one way for 3 days strait, sun up to set, truck runs just like the day I bought it, except for the brush scratches.

I drive an '08 2500HD with the Duramax and there's not much I'd be afraid to hook up to.

Angus, IMO you drove the creme of the crop of duramaxes. After that I feel the EPA killed them. The new ones are more powerful but they won't last unless you void the warranty and say goodbye to all the bullchit that comes on them.

GM, Ford, and Dodge have had some problems with the emmisions bs. I have drove all three diesels at work and the company has had trouble with all of them when it comes to the emmision systems. Allthough I own a 07 Dodge Cummins, I have to agree that the Duramax makes plenty of power and rides really good.

No responsible person should be pulling a heavy load faster than 65-70 mph to begin with.

My '07 GMC, Sierra Classic, 2500HD, 4x4, long box/crew cab Duramax with Allison 6 speed Trans (165,000 mi) won't turn as sharp as my Toyota Corolla but then again, my Toyota won't pull what my truck will. At 21.5 feet long, I think it's unreasonable to expect it to make tight corners. :2cents:

Any equivilent Ford will turn shorter then a chevy. That and having electrical problems with the couple of chevys I have owned has made me go back to Fords
