getting stung by things. I am building a 2/3 acre holding pen. I had a stack of telephone poles that I have been cutting posts from. Yesterday I was cutting posts and tying a strap on them to drag them with the tractor to the holes that I had drilled. Anyway, as I was tying onto a post I must have ticked off the unseen yellow jackets that had a nest in the ground under the post. They swarmed me. I got stung several times before I made it into the tractor and shut the doors only to find that I had 6 or seven more in the tractor cab with me. Note to self.....smacking at yellow jackets with a pair of leather gloves only makes them madder :help: I got stung twice more before I got them swatted down and killed. This afternoon I plan to treat them to a nuclear holocaust of gasoline and fire. Those things don't know when to let up  War has been declared. I had enough stings to make me sick to my stomach. Thank goodness I had some sting stopper around.

i'll take 5 yellow jackets or guinea wasp to 1 red wasp. I got hit by 1 red wasp saturday on the calf and all 3 places blistered and hurt like heII. got hit 16 times last year on the river setting bush hooks and they can and will bite under water. I usally get hurt trying to get away.

A well a used to be friend kept his horses in my pasture while he found a place to keep them his mare stepped on a yellow jackets next and ran through 4 strands of my barbed wire fence to get away. We had no idea why she did that till we went over there to fix the fence later on and they tore us up like they did the horse. Yellow jackets are horrible give me any other bee I will gladly take them.

Hoss, have you ever seen a mega nest of yellow jackets? I've seen only two in my life personally. These things are extremely dangerous because they are so large. For some reason the nest has multiple queens and they do not split off and form more hives. These things scare me. If you've ever come up on one it sounds like a waterfall and when you look at it its like gazing into the bowls of hades.

Don't know if this qualifies for mega but I got into a nest around a tree trunk whil I was clearing. It was about 7 to 8 feet across. Got stung 31 times and swolled up like a pillow. Took my 30-30, blasted several holes in to the tree and nest. I then backed up on the 4 wheeler with wasp sray and shot the nest for a 5 second count then burned out of there. I did that three times in a row. 2 evenings and one morning. The final morning there were 5 or 6 of them waiting for me outside my front door. My wife came over to me and said, your friends are here waiting on you. I went out the back door, made 2 moltov cocktails and sent them and their nest to heII

I've never seen one like that. For some reason around here they like a hole in the ground. I have been standing on top of some big enough that you could feel the buzz through the ground. Dug one out with the dozer that was about 2 ft around. Seemed like there were thousands of yeller jackets on it. I promptly pushed about 3ft of dirt on top of it. Seemed to work.

Back when I was falling timber we would get stung fairly regularly. One time I was standing on an underground yellojacket nest while falling a tree. With the noise and the sawdust I didn't notice them right away. They were all over me. One finally hit me where I could feel it. I dropped the saw and took off running. They had been going up my pant legs but hadn't reached the top of my boots until I started running. Every step I was getting stung on the knees when my pant pressed them against my skin. I did a forward roll kicking off my pants (good thing for loose fitting pants). I got up running but by then they were in my shirt. I jerked it off without missing a step. About this time I ran across the logging road. The loader operator and a truck driver both said they thought I had slipped a gear. All I had on was my caulked boots and my BVDs and they said I was clearing some serious ground. Ended up being stung about 50-60 times. Before that I never swelled up from a bee sting. Since that day I swell up like a poisoned pup when I get a bee sting.

I'm not sure but I believe the environmental factors limit the size of the nest so they break off and form more nests. But like in the 55 Alacowman posted there is no moisture or groundwater to limit them building the nest deeper so they just make it bigger. I found one of these in some real thick brush. There was a spot about 15 feet in diameter that looked like a child's sandbox and in the middle of this was a hole about 3 foot in diameter. I thought I was going to die when I got up on that but I was able to get away without disturbing them. They scared me to death because I was about a mile from my truck and I'm sure they would have stung me to death.

Here is one I found that was built in the ground but they then built it up a 16'. We almost hit it with a open cab dozer and this would have been a mess. I stood back about 15 feet from it and looked at it with binoculars and I swear it was a scary sight. I'll take snakes over these things any day cause these things scare me to death.

Dave, you might need to get one of those benedryl syringes to keep with you cause it sounds like you have become sensitized to them. I have a friend who works outdoors and he has been stung many times like you and if he gets stung now it will close his airway so he keeps the shot in his truck just in case.

Who knows ya mighta been made there too

Hoss, at least you was on the ground. Try getting into them on a pole or up in a tree. I got into yellow jackets 25 ft up on hooks once. That was a long climb back down, and yes yellow jackets will chase you all the way to the bottom of the pole. Got 11 stings that day. Probally would not have hurt as bad if I had have just jumped.

i dont like being stung by wasps or yellowjackets.been there done that lucky id only get stung once.i cant move fast enough to get away from them.so if i got swarmed id be in big trouble.same reason i wont rake where i know theres ground bees.

I thought I got stung yesterday but hearing some of you'uns.

I was mowing the yard and rolled over a new nest in the ground. Got hit about six times by some mean YJs. They just kept coming and I kept swatting

I blasted them good last night with wasp spray. Saw a couple back this morning but they would not go down their hole.

I'll hit them again tonight. Hurt like heck then itching like the dickens now. Glad I ain't alergic.
