:help: I have a cow that seems to have sprained her let or knee shes bred . She eats like a pig nurses her calf fine just walks with a limp. I have been giving her 12 asprin a day to try to help out. Her knee was swollen last friday but has went down but she is still limping. Her foot is fine nothing in it nothing broke off not swollen she was walking pretty good saturday but seems as though in the mornings its a lil rough for her. How long do yall typically let a what I think is a sprain go before shipping or whatever. I thought about putting that horse linament stuff on her knee to see if that helps. She walks and puts some weight on her leg and doesnt seem to be in any major pain. I don't like animals suffering but wondered typically how long does it take for them to heal or know when if they hadnt healed time for them to go. :help:
 
How long has it been? Perhaps some other antiinflamatory would work a lot more effectively.. Banamine and Dex are the two that come to mind, of course you have to watch withdrawal times

Nesi Friday is when she started limping. Thanks for the suggestions.
 
It can take a long time for "a sprain" to heal. Think about how long it can bother a person. It could be sore for weeks.
 
I would give the dozen aspirin (500 mg) a day a chance to work, like 2 weeks or so.

Depends on her age and how she does her job. I wouldn;t ship her just for a limp if she gets around ok and does her job to your satisfaction.

She is 4 and does a awesome job raising fast growing calves which is why I kept her when I sold most. She is due May. She eats like a pig and drinks just sucks seeing her like that I dont like animals being wounded or hurt. Doesnt seem to bother her though. She stands for the calf to nurse and is on foot most of the day.
 
we had a 12 year old cow get into a fight with 2 other cows at once, I think one of them buggered up her hip, and she never did recover (after 5 months). I would give yours a bunch of time yet, and if you give her Aspirin, it takes a LOT, a dozen or two pills does nothing, I got a bunch of BIG boluses.. I think it was like 10g or more each.. it is also not very long lasting.

Good point about the Dex.. Banamine would still be an option, though it's usually injected (My vet gave me about 20cc doses for once a day), I wasn't able to tell if it helped much because I found out later she also had a barbed wire injury on the hoof, so even if the hip felt better the hoof might have still caused a limp. There's also devils claw root, etc.

That was how I treated Granny when she had a bunged hip. Vet didn;t think she would last through weaning. Gave us 4 more dandy calves before the end.

I will take 4 more too. asprins 6 bucks for 500 pills here so I will feed them to her long as she needs them.
 
I would sell and buy a replacement. But you sound certain she doesn't have a cut or puncture, which is good. And being a young cow she might be worth keeping. Is she running a fever? We have one now that's penned up with her calf, because she's limping. Been messing with her for a month but she's going to town when I get home. I'm not willing to take a chance on her getting sick. She will bring close to $1,500.00 and her steer calf is closing in on 300 lbs.
 
Yea I looked all over her foot and cleaned it up as well. No fever at all her calf is a heifer and is about 200lbs She I would atleast like 1 more calf from her. I will take a chance on her at long as shes eating like a hog and caring for her daughter and having no issues getting up.
 
My wife wants to give her a chance to get better and have another calf or two. If she's favoring her left rear and not out with the calving herd she's going to town. She's been a great cow but I'm not willing to have a train wreck, why gamble at these prices?

I guess its worth a gamble cause I had a pretty nice sale with most of my herd and she was in my top 5 to keep. It also doesn't help my kids daily routine is get up and feed her a handful of corn before school and shes waiting by the gate when they get home for another handful. :lol2:
