I have a pretty good size pond with waterer buried in the lowest part of the dam, It sort of looks like a coffin with a small amount not covered by dirt. It sort of works like a commode with a leaky valve, water trickles through it all the time. Until a cow drinks enough water then a big valve opens and it refills. It doesn't freeze.
The issue is, my cows don't like to go back there. My pond backs up under a fence and they prefer to drink there. Right now that part is froze like a rock.
It has been a few years since the pond froze up and I am wondering if the cows have enough noodles to remember to go where the water is??
I got a bag of feed and poured on the ground around the waterer at daylight this morning and know at least a couple of them stuck there nose in the water.
Sitting at my desk, it is easy to worry they are dumb enough to push through the fence and fall through the ice instead of going where the water is....
