I have been reading articles on protein and percentages. My question is if I want to feed out some steers how much protein do I need to feed? I want to make my own feed with my ingredients. I have the following ingredients, ground corn and garbanzo bean. Also how much better is soybean than corn?

Thanks for the help

I personally like the corn better to finish with. The mixture that I use is 12% protein. All the quality hay they can eat and a ration of that gives them all they need.

For open cows, stockers, lactating cows, finishing out, etc. ?
One feed fits all is not possible. As calves grow their requirements may change.
I firmly believe that efficiency plays a large role.
What works for me, no feed except for gentling purposes for a couple of months, would not work for many others.
Experience and a good eye will ultimately tell you what to feed as far as protein.

1st thing, corn is an energy and starch source and Soybean meal is for protein supplementation. They compliment each other but never replace each other. If you're growing steers forget protein and think energy (calories). Mix you corn and soybean meal at around 10:1 ratio (10 lbs. corn with 1lb. soybean meal). You'll have about a 11.5 to 12% crude protein feed with tremendous digestibility and energy levels. I'd probably add a source of fiber to the mix as well....something like soybean hulls, cottonseed hulls or beet pulp if you have it just for "fill" or make sure you also give them plenty of hay.
