Rule of thumb I use it cost a 1.50 a day to maintain a cow.
Some years its lower some a little higher. I would think a bottle calf would be higher.
Milk replacer is not cheap as well as Calf feed and the time in the little devil.

Exactly why I sell off the ones that I do have when I get them.

Db

500# holstein steers 1.50-1.70

I buy at Albany & Zumbrota, Mn... Pipestone is probably your market.
I will pay up to 1.50 for 500# holsteins ($750) but this month I did not get any bought...
saw them sell for 1.51 - 1.70 ($755 - $850 hd)

bought a group of 393# holstein steers 1.49 = $585 hd plus $11 to vac and implant so cost to me was $597 hd
bought a group of 235# hols steers 1.73 = $410 hd
put together 8 hols bull calves that averaged 172 lbs for $335 hd or 1.95 lb
got carried away and paid $400 hd for 2 nice 180 lb hols steers 2.15 lb

watched hols bull calves sell
75 lb - 105 lb holstein bull calves $180 - $300 hd

Yeah I'll go to pipestone. Looks like prices aren't that bad.
I'm doing more research though before I dive in. Thanks all you for your help!
