My grandfather-in-law has 10 acres; five cleared, five of woods and brush that he wants me to pasture for him. It is steep and has not been fertilized in 10 years. We already have more pasture than we need for our cows, so I was going to buy some dairy calves in December to put on the place. The place would pasture 2 cows unfertilized, 3 fertilized. Does any one know how many calves it would take to keep it eat down?

you say you have 5acs of pasture to put weaned calves on.id say you can put 10 weaned calves on that pasture to keep it ate down.1 thing tho make sure the calves are all eating feed an healthy.you dont want to have to dr them alot.

Make sure the fences are in good shape. Holstein calves are notorious for finding holes and gaps in fences. Neighbour took 40 week old calves to yearlings a few years back. In the winter they were ok, but in the summer as yearlings they found every spot they could to go hunting for greener pastures....one of which was our 2nd crop alfalfa field.

2 to an acre if it is poor pasture....check for noxious weeds first though, and keep an eye on them. if they start to grow slow or look thin you will have to suplement them.
