How does one person represent so many cattle for sale?

He a broker most likely, He contacts the farmers and offers them a price to buy what they have for sale, He advertises to make a small profit off each animal. the real seller likes this deal because this guy does the marketing and closes the deal. no different than any other broker for any other commodity out there.
 
He may be just selling them for people on commission too. I know a guy in South Dakota that markets bred cows for a living. If you call him and need cows sold he charges 10-25 dollars a head to sell them depending on how many you are selling. In order to do it his way he has built up a huge customer base all over those western states though. He has sold a pot load of cows for me in less than 10 minutes before.
 
My son in law buys for several feedlots on commission, reps on Superior, sells for people on commission, and buys private treaty. Shipping a thousand head is a slow week for him in the fall. Lots of phone calls, video, contracts, and generally staying organized. Buyers call him. Sellers call him. He just takes a small slice for putting it together.
 
Yeah I buy for a few guys on commission and my dad sells a quite a few fats for small feedlots on commission as well simply because he has worked with the buyers in the packing plants around him for years and he can get more out of the buyers than most people. Commission on feeder cattle isn't quite as much fun as that bred cow commission. I'd sure like to buy and sell 1000+ head a week and put 10 dollars a head commission on them. Would make for a good yearly wage.

It would be pretty hard for a cattle trader to come up with enough money to have 1000 head for sale. In this market that would likely be between 2 and 3 million dollars worth of cattle and I have never seen a cow trader come up with that much money before

Big difference between brokering and trading
A trader buys and sells cows from individuals or sale barns and puts like kind lots of cattle together and sells them to individuals or thru the salebarn

A Broker brings buyers and sellers together and get a small % for taking care if the transaction
Most brokers will stand behind the cattle to be what they are represented to be and usually will guarantee the funds to the seller
 
Yes, big difference in broker and trader. I'm a trader, I work my hind end off buying cattle at sales all over where there's not a good market for them, bring them home take care of them and make a group to sell where there is a market for them.

I have a friend that has a business brokering construction equipment. He takes pictures, puts ads all over the Internet, meets buyers to show the equipment and handles the money transfer for a percent. That's pretty much the same with these cattle brokers.
 
Brokering cows is mainly about your ability to market cows and develop relationships with customers because a successful broker moves cattle as fast as possible. I have traded on cattle and brokered cattle both at different points in my life. Brokering is significantly less stressful because none of your own money is at risk but trading has the potential to make a great deal more money. Whether you put together the cattle yourself and sell them to a customer or find a producer and broker a sale its all about keeping your customer happy.
 
a rep an order buyer and a cattle trader are three completely different things even though many people do one or more them.
