handle ragweed. Seems I've got more than usual this year. We did overgraze a little earlier this year because my dad kept his cows with ours this spring but now the weeds are springing up everywhere.

Spray with a pint of 2,4-d per acre.

The best way I know to deal with it is to clip it before it blooms. You can kill the plants but it does nothing to the seeds that will eventually come up again. Keeping it clipped will prevent it from blooming and making seed.

Is 2,4-D safe to graze? My dad claims he has lost calves to it before. Dad wants to mow it but I think that is just wasting time since its not killing it.

Most Ragweed is an annual not a perennial. You can kill it but the seed is what brings it back next year, not the roots. So keeping it clipped is usually the best and most economical solution, but if you have other weeds that are a problem then spraying may be something I would consider. It is just a theory of mine but I believe Ragweed could be one of the causes of Pinkeye in cattle, by irritating the soft tissue and giving the virus a place to start. So I try my best to keep it clipped. It may only be my imagination but I don't have any problems with Pinkeye.
I've spot sprayed and left the animals in the pasture, but these are the Published Grazing restrictions:
2,4-D, generic - Do not forage or feed corn or sorghum fodder or graze animals on treated pasture areas for 7 days after application.
Do not cut forage for hay within 30 days of application. Do not permit dairy animals or meat animals being finished
for slaughter to forage treated forage grass fields within 3 days of slaughter or treated grain fields within 2 weeks of
slaughter. Do not feed treated straw to livestock if a preharvest treatment or emergency treatment is applied. Do not
feed treated hay, forage, or fodder or graze treated soybeans to livestock. Do not feed or graze treated cover crops
to livestock. Refer to the label for other information.

Grazon P+D - Do not allow lactating dairy animals to graze treated areas within 7 days after application. Do not harvest grass cut
for hay from treated areas for 30 days after application. Meat animals must be withdrawn from treated forage at
least 3 days before slaughter. There are no other grazing restrictions for non-lactating dairy animals or other
livestock.

I'd be pretty confident the 2,4-d didn't cause the death of your Dad's calves.

I had a wildlife biologist tell me ragweed was one of the quail friendliest plants you can have.
