Hot wire fence

I am going to put a hot wire fence around one of our pastures and i was woundering if two strings of wire will hold cows...

That is going to depend largely on whether your cows are hot wire trained or not. A few other variables as well, but this one is the biggie.

Actually, that is not generally a problem unless you're training in a solid corral - otherwise he will probably simply jump through the fence. :)
 
Ok well i am just going to have some cows and some calfs i would just let them with all the rest of the cows but i am just going to put them closer to the pens(hard to get up) I will be selling them in about 5 months once they have a calf.....

Not sure if it crossed your mind or not but you have to watch the grass around the fence. I've had it happen a couple times that some grass was touching the wire and grounded it out so i lost most of the juice to the wire. Might have to mow along the fence to avoid the problem. Just a suggestion

Leave the lower wire cold, and they will trim the ground around the fence for you.
 
Yea i have figured that out when we had some calfs and the grass got to tall and then they got out....

Actually you probably wouldn't have any problem keeping them in with just one wire, biggest problem with cattle not being used to a new electric fence is they don't see it and walk right through it before knowing any better. The first time I put up a new electric fence I try to hang surveyors tape on it so they can see the boundary and know where to stop.
 
don't use string. TAPE is the only way to go. much more visible to cows and wildlife. We had a lot of trouble keeping fences up because the deer would always run into it. Since we switched to tape there is zero problem with that. We even use the tape to direct our cattle to different areas of the farm. We can change their direction with just putting the tape up and getting it "hot"

You must not the wind we do. The tape chafes through from the wind rubbing it on the insulators afte just a couple of uses. We're still using some of the polywire that we've been using for 7-8 years now. The only time we have trouble with the deer runningthrough it is during the rut, and they try to run through the solid wire then too.
Once they figure out where it is during the non-rut we don;t have any problems.
We also use string, plain old cotton string if we're just setting up a quick alleyway or a block across the driveway. We graze the sides of the driveway a couple of times a year, cheaper then brushhogging.

Neither one, hot wire tape is a white (not sure if that's the only color or not) poly tape about 1/4-1/2" wide that is strung similar to wire (I don't know exactly what the difference in stringing it is) and then electrified via a charger.
 
I usually spray roundup along the fence to prevent earthing by the grass or weeds, the animals quickly learn to associate the lines of burned off grass with the 'hot' fence.
This has worked with cattle, pigs and goats with success, the deer usually take a few days longer, but soon learn.
