Hot wire fence question(s)

Have any of you ever used the galvanized stays on a hot wire fence ? I'm trying to avoid buying the precious metal overpriced T-posts. I'm thinking of putting my line posts every 35 ft or so for a 3-wire fence to separate my pastures into paddocks but I want some sort of stability in between that span. Looks like I can get them for $32.50/100ct.

Also, this is more for the Texas boys............Anyone know where I can get some cedar posts ? I live about 8mi south of Elgin, Tx and don't mind driving a bit to get them but right now my closest lead is Leakey (3hrs). I can do that when I go fill deer feeders at the lease but don't want to if I can find them closer. This guy has 6-1/2' x 4" straight for $3.50, and crooked for $2.75

Does not make any diference what you use as long as it holds the wire where you want it, and has an insulator. I have even used 3/8 rebar and sticks.

Actually I wasn't going to use an insulator. It would twist onto the hotwire and be free standing. Seems like it would be okay as long as it didn't touch the ground, right ?

All of the wires would have to be insulated. In effect what you would be doing is using the stays as jumpers to make all wires hot.

There is a post yard north of Gonzales on 304 between IH10 and where 304 runs into 97. It'll be on your right headed south. You can hit 304 at Bastrop beside that big GM dealership right after you pass Home Depot.

There is also one on 46 just south of New Braunfels going toward Seguin. I don't run that country enough to tell you exactly where it is.

Also Harwood feed at Harwood has a lot of posts. And you might check over around Smithville. I don't know of anybody but the people at Smith Supply might.Z

Tractor supply has insulators that will works with rebar type stays for electric fences. I put cedar post every 100 or so yards and then put the white fiberglass rods (you can buy them at tractor supply too) every 25-30 years with insulators to hold the wire in place. Seems to work ok for me.

It is hard to beat the price of the post up in leakey.

Thanks Dun, I didn't even think about that way making everything hot, would've find out the hard way. Also, thanks to the cedar post info fellas. I appreciate everyones help.

Elgin Ringer,there are some cedar yards here in kendall county but,it does'nt compare to the cedar you will find in Leaky.
It is known to have alot of (heart)..............good luck

There is a post yard in Meridian, northwest of Waco on hwy 6. Might be a little closer. Probably some around Hamilton or Gatesville.

For stays in your hot fence you can use 3/8 fg rods, small fg t-posts or plastic battens. TSC should have each of these.
