I'm far enough north that my ground has a good bit of sand in it clay is about 18 inches down . I took the post hole diggers and dug down about a foot in the hay field and the soil is moist . So not much ran off. In the past 2 inches of rain would get me a decent cutting . The coastal and tifton 85 that I planted did well in the drought last year but we are as bad now as we were in august last year .
 
JSCattle, hope you luck out on it. I have a clay loam and their is still some moisture there, but I havent mowed any of my pastures this spring . Also I have very few cattle grazing anymore, so there is a pretty good stand of grass. I would be afraid in your case that you have a hay field that is still pretty short from lack of moisture, and now we have these darn 100 degree days hitting us, that is gonna dry that sand out quick. I fill for you guys cause your stuck between a rock and a hard place...You also are going to have to worry abot nitrate poisoning now.
 
Im afraid to cut my fields because like u said the 100 degree sun will cook the sand and grass roots . at least with leaf coverage it insulates it a little .
