Horse rescue funding

I have a small farm near us where the couple have about 50 horses and more arriving that are horse rescue animals. Some really look tough. Who pays to support these animals as this couple obviosly are not wealthy and they don't do anything with the horses They often are out on the road and in the fields. We too have a stallion and half a dozen registered mares. My wife swears revenge if one of their stallions get over here. This does not make for good neighbors as the sheriff has been over there many times on complaints, we didn't report them but others did. Farmguy

I have friends who have a horse rescue in AR. They are able to accept donations but most of the money comes straight out of their own pockets. I don't know how they do it. The feed bill alone is astronomical.

They run their's a little different than the one near you. All males are gelded when they come on the property. And I don't know of any that escape. Good fences make good neighbors, huh?

This stuff just burns me up! Some knuckle head thinks they want to do good, or figures on making a quick buck, decides to rescue horses. Then they find out they can't afford to take proper care of them and keep the fences up. Then the sherriff comes out and the rescued horses need rescued from the folks that rescued them. :mad:

It's happened 4 or 5 times out here, some always have to be put down and they others are sent to another rescue person.

Needs to be ran like the dog pound, if the horse is unwanted or they can't find a home after a period of time they need to put it down. It would be better than a life of starvation and bad health.

The rescue I'm talking about doesn't try to adopt the horses out. They take horses who are abandoned or are not fit for the owners use any more and give them a home until they die. They are well cared for, loved and allowed to be horses for the rest of their lives. This couple has made this their life. I would not want to do it and have no problem with putting animals down but this is what they decided to do and I wouldn't try to say that its not right (for them). But the horses do not suffer and definately are not starved. They are taken care of better than my horses and mine are not abused in any way.

Don't mean to stick my nose where it don't belong, but I don't think Alan was referring to your earlier post. It was very plain to me, that your friends have a love of horses and do not abuse them. What I got from his post was, people who adopt without having the ability to care for them, shouldn't.

Yes, I was refering to the earlier post, the neighbors who couldn't keep the fence up. In the case of your freinds, it sound like they can afford to do what they are doing and that alone makes it a great deed! My hats off to people like that. It's the ones who can't afford to buy feed for the 50 to 100 horses they have rescued and end up having them die and be put down. I've seen and heard about just a few, but that's too many. :mad:

Alan,

I didn't think that you were referring to this particular rescue or to all rescues. Just wanted to let people know that there are responsible rescues out there. The ones that are like the one stated in the first post can tarnish the image of all rescues, thereby effecting their ability to raise outside funds. Didn't mean to sound offensive in my post. :oops:
