I am asking for a friend, I have lost my link That I used for determining genetic traits. If anyone has a good link for this please post it, if it isnt to much trouble, thanks in advance :)

Bred a polled cow with a horned bull, they produced a horned bull calf. If this horned bull calf is bred with a polled cow what are the chances of the offspring having horns?

if the cow is hetero polled, 50/50.
if she is homo polled, 0%.

[assuming we are not talking about scurs or african horn gene]

Thanks for the reply, lets see if I have this right. I am going to use "H" as the horn gene not sure what it is supposed to be.

The original cow is angus, so she would be "hh" The Bull Im not sure of he could be "Hh" or "HH". So the Bull calf should be "Hh" since he has horns. If the Bull calf is bred to an "hh" cow the offspring could be "Hh" or "hh".

Am I correct, if so wouldnt this make it 50/50 on the offspring being horned? Please correct me if I am wrong.

well, one problem: there is no (normal) horn gene; there is a polled gene.
if an animal is polled, it is either PP, Pp, or pP. if it is horned, it is pp.

if a cow is a registered Angus, she should be PP (not guaranteed, of course). if the bull has horns, he is pp. this breeding would have all polled offspring (Pp, Pp, Pp and Pp). if the cow has ever produced horned off spring she is Pp, which would make the offspring possibilities Pp, pp, pP, and pp => 50% chance of polled (Pp and pP) and 50% chance of horned (pp and pp).
