Hominey

Help Support CattleToday:

I have known dairy farmers who fed hominy with brewers grains and other by-product feeds. They got along well with it, when it was available for the right price. Also, some beef people have fed it during droughts or high grain and hay prices. I dont know anything other than they liked it and got along well with it as a mixture.

It's been a long time, but as I remember the Hominy feed had a high digestibility, higher protein/fat content than corn, and was very economical. Typically it is a byproduct of a milling plant that makes food grade flour and corn meal. Our supplier was Morrison Milling out of Denton, TX.

We fed some of the stuff pelleted the past couple of winters to finish calves and give mamas something to eat we were paying around $140/ton pelleted and it was right around 15% protein and they did very well off of it. but, now were looking and trying some cheaper routes.
