Holstein for the freezer

My neighbor just bought a Holstein cow from the auction and wants to put her in the freezer. What is the best way to finish her off (??? type of feed) She is very healthy except she has a bum wheel and he got her for 12 cents per pound.

Any suggestion

When I was a kid, my daddy would buy a holstein bottle baby rom the local dairy to put in the freezer. We always fed 'em a horse and mule sweet feed. I don't remember the protein content, but they gained well on it and had some great tasting meat from those calves.

High-quality corn and oats/barley + high-quality hay. What's the cow's body condition now? Some holstein cows are VERY hard to put weight on, even when they're dry (not milking). If she has *some* fat cover on her now, she may be the sort that will put on weight when given good feed. She's holstein, so don't expect her to look truly finished like a beef animal, but if she'll put some weight on you can butcher her and actually have some meat. :lol:

If she looks like skin-and-bones now...well, she may just be the sort that isn't going to put weight on.

theres no way you can finish out a hol cow.id say feed her good an heavy.an let her gain 200 to 300lbs.an then butcher her.20lbs of grain plus hay,should have her ready to butcher in 60 to 90 days.
