Holdens Catalog is up on the web

I did a quick scan and didn't see a bull that I liked as much as last year's top seller that was much discussed here at CT.

I sure hate to see that they decided to only sell a few LIMITED semen packages on 8203 at a price that makes it prohibitive for most folks to buy them. A bull like 8203 needs to be used a LOT, rather than his use restricted to where only the "so-called elitists" can afford him.

How much did that bull bring last year?

What did they sell semen packages for?

I'm guessing by your tone, you didn't buy a package?

Thanks!

$50,000 for half interest.

25 straws for $2500, 75 straws for $5000 . Only 10 of each package will be sold. 8203 will be a non-cert sire.

No, I didn't buy a package - for several reasons, the primary one being that I just bought a PROVEN herd bull that I need to use immediately and it'd be 2-3 years before I'd use much of this semen. I guess I could have just bought it for "speculation", but doing so would have denied someone else who probably would have used the semen this year.

George,

a novice question: what is a "non-cert sire"? If he is the sire he is the sire and will be in the pedigree of all registered calves, right? For $5,000 you sure should get more than something producing commercial calves or do I misunderstand the certs thing....

Jim

Non-cert sire: means that you don't need to buy certificates to register this bull's calves.

George

P. S. I corrected my post to make it a little clearer.

Thank you. That makes sense. Jim

Thanks, George.

I'm sure you posted it or told me, but what "proven" bull did you buy?

Take good care of that Achiever cow.

No, the deal on the bull was finalized this week - I've been waiting until he safely arrives at the bull stud in Canton before posting anything about him. I understand he's traveling along some treacherous roads in the Midwest right now.

The Achiever cow's heifer calf keeps getting better every day! I bet they're cold this morning - I know I am!

I am hoping you registered guys overlook a few of the unique bulls at Holdens this year...lol....Maybe I can buy a couple of them to use on my black and baldy cows...lol

I'm am not knocking Holden's in any way, but I think you could get just as good of a bull for black cows at a lot cheaper price from the Miles City sale. It is usually in March.

Most of my cattle are commercial. I just recently started dabbling in the Registered biz.

If not, I have some good Line 1's that might be a wee bit cheaper!

You could just drop him off here till better weather say about first of june. :)
Hope he gets to his new home in good shape.

I just got my catalog in the mail the other day. I really like the bull on the back cover. HH advance 9111w. I've never been around Holden's cattle. A little too rich for my blood. Just wondering....How big are the cow's??. Some of these bull's look like they would make a good terminal cross rather maternal.

Can always visit H'76 and take a look at his bulls. Sorry 808 has already been sold, to us. :D :D
He's not too far away from Holdens.

Just wanted to say .. if you are at ALL interested in a bull from Holdens (or even if you are not !) .. it is well worth going to the sale. We went last year .. picked a bull .. and NEVER thought we would afford him .. but we did.. and he has turned out really well ... bred about 35 cows this summer and I am really excited to see his calves in another month ..

Oh .. and the Panther Cafe in Valier makes the BEST homemade burgers and pie .. LOL !! That is worth the trip too !!

Maybe see some of you guys on the 8th ??

and George .. when are you gonna let the cat out the bag and tell us all about your new bull ??

Jen

Jenran. I was just wondering what Sire your Bull is out of. How did you handle getting the Bull home?

As a general rule, bulls that weigh 1400+ at yearling have a hard time siring 1200-1300 pound females that would be called "easy keeping".

Yea I thought so. I'm using a PB hereford bull on some PB Angus cows to get some nice F1's for my main herd. Looking at the numbers in Holden's catalog I question what size of cow I'll get from his bulls. To be honest..don't know much about line one cattle or Holden's herd. People rave about them. Looking in the Catalog they do have some dandy bulls! It just looks for me like mostly terminal bulls. :)
