Local sales barns seem to be reaching a saturation point. Lots of stories going around about how to dispose of 280# butcher hogs. They were rendering them initially, but there is not nearly enough capacity. Now they are experimenting with putting them into chippers, and mixing with wood chips to get the composting C/N ratio right. Some stories also about putting them into TMRs with round bales... Really sad waste of food.
That's the only way they depose of pigs at the sow farms now in this area. Actually more biosecure to compost them yourself, then have a rending truck drive on your farm a couple times per week.
Green wood chips work best, mix with deads, pile in a bunker and turn once a month.
You can do it too with any dead cows you have, don't need a vert mixer, just have to wait longer.
Place the dead in a manure pile with a couple bags of wood chip and let it set for 3-4 months. Only be the bigger bones left.
