when i think of a hobby, i think of hunting, fishing, roping etc... i can do them when i want to. and have the time....my cattle dont wait on me to get around to them, if they were a hobby, id stuff em in the closet a pull em out when i felt like it......... and thats my take on it :cowboy:

Seems like these days every body's got to be scaled, weighed and measured for percieved value, and the perceptions are skewed to a class society.
Part and parcel of shifting to a ruling class society over time.
I figure they can call me what they want.
I'll let'em know what I'll answer to.
But I don't really care too much what the pigeon holers think or say anyway.

no doubt about that...and this aint directed at you.. its directed at folks that get offened being called hobbist..and the biggest reason is because of the hard work put into it... i could go out and buy the best bass boat and riggs,i could afford... but it wont make me any better at catching em....

To me the term has more to do with the desire to make a profit. Or when one lets petty preferences get in the way of economic traits. I think it's more of a mind set that becomes obvious in time even through the boards here.

But you are absolutely right, a "hobby" doesn't need constant care. Dare I say treating or talking about them like "pets" is where a line is drawn.

small business or big business if you buy and sell and try and make a profit it's not a hobby. hobbies IMO are things that you put money in and the return is not monetary. I do see some people that have livestock that do not care what it cost and do not try to make money to them it is a hobby.

For me it's a hobby now but I still try to make decisions like it's my only source of income. Cattle were my "living" long enough. Now just enjoying them, taking care of them. Selling when appropriate and the same for purchases. It certainly is not now totally profit driven...that said I certainly don't want it to be a big loss either.

i'll can tell you probably the worst time to call me a hobbist... would be on a cold rainy evening coming in after work ..getting on the tractor and putting out hay... while the pro's are sippin' coffee at the local cafe... :cowboy:

I write mortgage loans as my primary occupation.

I have a partner with whom I buy, rehab and sell properties. I consider this a sideline but not really a hobby although I do make decent money with it.

I work the family farm when time allows (4 hours away so that hurts) and I do consider that my hobby even though we're currently tending over 100 mommas, 4 herd bulls (one's about to be shipped) and 30-50 calves at any given time since we still calve year round. The only money I see out of it is for gas money. I truly love the lifestyle but can't afford to quit my other two jobs.

I've learned a lot on CT since joining a couple of years ago.

Mine is a hobby. I am in the process of building steam for my retirement in 6 years. I have enough to keep me busy all day everyday now. Hopefully I will become more profitable, with more.

Well for me you have to consider how I approach all my "hobby's". Me and the wife started not only with nothing we srarted out in the hole so whatever "hobby" i involve myself in has to pay it's way. If i canot show a profit then i am out of it sooner or later.

The biggest reason I raise registered cattle is that if i was doing commercial it woud be a break even or losing proposition and The only thing i am willing to lose money on are the grandkids. Everything else has to pay it's way and preferably make a profit. So whether it's Guns or cows or a couple of other sidelines it's for profit.

I do not do much of anything for the "Love of the Game" I do however really like my cowherd some more than others but even there is she don't make a profit she's gone. To me that takes it out of the realm of a hobby.

A little note here about breeding. My cow manager runs around 160 registered Angus cows and belkieve me when i say she is totally against line breeding. She feel like she needs fresh genetics every couple of years in order to satify her bull customrs need for the same. However her cowherd is very much a cookie cutter herd as she selects for the same phenatype consistantly, So even though they are not linebred they are selected for by a tight criteria and thus when she switches bull bloodlines she does get a lot of consistancy from year to year because of her cowherd.

are there other hobbys that can do that??
