Foal watch once again, my mare is waxed up and ready to go. She was due last Sat. but I think by her signs we are looking at tonight or tomorrow. When I posted about last years foal I stated I was hoping for a Bay filly with a good "want to please" attitiude. Flaboy jinxed me and I got a Bay colt with a "want to please" attitiude. But he's alot of fun to handle and work with, I'm keeping him.... even if he is starting to think with his other two brains in the back end. I'll post some pics of the new "filly" when she is on the ground.

Anyone else with pics of their foals please post .... it helps me feel like spring is finally here!

Alan - we should have two babies on the ground in the next couple of weeks. We pasture breed, so any exact date can't be calculated. One mare waxed up and was dripping three weeks ago. Stood off by herself, etc., etc. so we cancelled everything and stood watch. Still watching. :D Her last two foals were on tax day - April 15 two years ago and April 17 last year. We're betting on April 16 this year. I'll try and post pictures when they arrive, but that's way outside my area of expertise.
 
Alan, with regard to your last year's colt - might be time to consider surgical removal of his two spare "brains"? If I have a colt that I know is going to make a nice gelding - I have usually gelded them as soon as possible, before weaning usually so he can get some comfort from momma - it hardly phases them and then the correct brain gets all the development! I'm not having any foals this year for the first time in ages - I'm missing it already - gonna have to hang out at the neighbor's I guess - they're having a couple!

This colt is pretty nice and pretty well bred, he hasn't came close to earning the previlege of being a gelding. Don't get me wrong I believe 99.5% of colts should be gelded.

She is now 4 days over due, I fear I have another colt baking :(

Good luck with your colt Alan. So, it' s colts late and fillies early? I've heard that before - it's never worked for me though - last year we had 4 - all colts, 1 about 2 wks early - 2 right on time and one about a week late - all over the board! So I know what you mean about yearlings - just starting to feel "manly" - I think it's like terrible twos in people kids! They are starting to want to act all grown up but have no idea how to do it. I've got a really nice grulla colt (gelding) that will be a year old next month and he's already 14.3h - just measured him the other day! His momma is about 14/2 and his sire is about the same - his mom is out of a real nice TB mare so I guess he's a "throwback" - nice horse though - gonna be big and built like a brick you know what. My hubby's got dibs on him for his next rope horse already!
 
Funny how us guys tend to want to claim the good horses for ourselves. :D I talk big when my wife isn't around.

Yeah - I don't see him out there dragging those colts around - halter breaking and teaching them manners - or starting them - Oh yeah, he says he's too heavy to ride the babies - I don't buy it for a second - he's the first one hanging over the round pen fence giving advice! Just kidding - he's a great guy and I love working with the babies!
