here are the symptoms, what disease is it?

First let me start by saying I lived on a farm my whole life and we always had cows. Not a breeding herd, just fattening and reselling steers & heifers. Not much profit in it, but we couldn't afford anything else. I don't live there anymore, military service called to me, but my family still buys & sells. Ok, so here's my dilemma: not much money for real veterinary service so usually we use the old old methods my papa says will work, they usually do. However, this time we are completely stumped. Never had anything like this happen ever before. Had about 10 steers & heifers and within one week we only have 3 left. Symptoms: walking until they fall down dead or nearly dead, looked to continue their walking movements after being incapacitated. Some lantana and night shade were noticed in a far end of a field and a couple of the plants were slightly eaten, but no real indications that it was enough to poison. Those plants were removed and then one of the three remaining animals had some bloating. A simple baking soda mixture cured that and the other two calves are fine as of today. Any ideas whatsoever?

you could have payed for a vets service with one of those dead calves. sounds like some type of poisoning for sure were they breathing like a race horse before they died?

See, that's the part I don't know. I don't live there and my mom didn't say if they were breathing hard or not. I will ask. They don't have internet way out there so I am trying to look up what I can online for her. Yes, I agree that they could've gotten a vet for the cost of one of those cows, but they think since I moved away that my opinion doesn't mean much. I do what I can from afar! Thanks for your help
