I can see you loosing your shirt if you are buying cows at 5k to 10k, or even more. And the price of these bulls is pretty outrageous too, you would have to be doing alot of volumn or getting big dollars for offspring to just pay for things. But if you are paying 2k or so for top cows that are bred with top sires, it makes it affordable. It's great for me, I can build a herd of top quality cattle for about what it would cost to buy cheap cattle. ;-)
 
The people selling out had all these top cows and bulls and they are selling out. One reason these people are getting out is that it takes a lot of feed for them top bloodlines.
 
I can see where feeding them would be a major problem in some areas, I have plenty of good grass and year round streams to water with if need be.

I have been wondering if things might go back to smaller scale operations and cattle being sold for beef in the area they are raised in, vs. transporting them in volumn and having the high fuel involved?

In a true free market I would tend to agree; BUT we live in much more of a command economy than that. U.S. gov and state and local gov rules, restrictions, permitting processes, etc makes it hard to site a new slaughter plant.....much less the feedlots which supply it. For the packing industry too move towards the population centers (think nuisance lawsuits over the smell here) would be extremely costly and in many cases we lack the grain (or open land) too finish the cattle near major population centers like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Atlanta, etc. The industry has found that it is usually cheaper too haul the calves to the grain than the grain to the calves.
 
Camp Cooley had a "dispersal" sale. There is a bunch of dispersals going on. I think it is a matter of opportunity for the buyer and seller.
