I started my herd with limousine x holstein bottle babies for mamma cows. I have had them a long time. I have tried several bulls. And this has never been a problem. I decided to buy a reg. red angus bull. Most of the calves either turn out black or red. What I can't have is those coming out looking like holsteins. And every year I get a small number either red and white or black and white spotted. I was told that the red angus doesn't mask the holstein like the black angus. Well this years first calf out of a 1/8 '' holstein mamma, comes out a blk striped heifer calf. I thought each generation later my odds would improve on coloring to get away from the blk. spotted color. I have two very good red angus bulls that I guess I will get rid of and get something black instead. Any ideas ?
 
Holsteins carry 2 copies of a recessive spotting gene. Most other breeds can also carry these genes because they are recessive and there is no gene marker test for them, the only way to know is by progeny testing (the quickest way is to breed the bull to several spotted cows or known carriers, it is the same principle that was used to find out if bulls were homo polled where they bred them to horned cows or known horn carriers). If the calves were truly spotted then the sire and dam are carriers. The red and black does not make a difference the spot gene is a different gene pair.

so your saying the red angus spotts up the limmo Xhol cows calves.the red angus makes them red an white spotted.my beef herd is hereford x hol cows.an im getting some red an white spotted calves from them.but ive also had a holstein an hereford bulls running with them till a yr ago.now ive got a reg beefmaster on them.black angus might make them all black.i might be tempted to put a calving ease char bull on those cows.an go for the cream colored calves.
 
We run several holstein x hereford cross mommas and have bred them to the red brangus and blk angus bulls and have never had a calf come out spotted. Are your cows spotted?
