HELP

Thank you. (I just didnt know if a heifer could still produce milk if it hadn't had a calf)

Having a calf causes her to freshen. At least that is what we say in my part of the world.

In order for any mammalian species to produce milk, the female must give birth to offspring. This includes cattle, horses, hogs, bats, whales, armidillos, 'coons, tigers, gorillas, humans, etc. After a cow has a calf she begins to secrete milk from her udder. She will have to be bred again after she calves to continue to give milk. After her calf is weaned she will go dry and not give milk again until she has her next calf. A beef cow will usually be nursing and caring for her calf for 6-8 months. Then she gets a rest from nursing for a few months until she calves again.
