Help training cow dog

I have a 6 month old Kelpie x Blue heeler puppy and want it to ride with me on tractor but she don't want to ride on anything not even my quad. She just shakes and drooles I try to calm her down and hold her nothing works. I started taking her for short rides when doing chores but she pukes every time. Any help? thanks Tamarack

Dunno--I had a heeler that loved to ride in my truck--another that wouldn't stay in either the front or in the bed at all--put it in the bed of the truck and as soon as I closed the tailgate or walked away it would jump out. In the front, it would claw that window and door non-stop.

Put her in her crate in the back of the truck when your home.

I would advise against it. Lost a fellow here coming on two years ago, your age, when he went to open a gate to feed cows with a bale on the front end and the dog jump on the loader controls and dumped the bale on top of him.

Our Aussie pukes unless the kids ride along and keep her calm. Drools like a fool. I'd love for her to go but since she doesn't like the vehicle I have to lift her and that gets old.

IMO its much like training a dog.. They either have it in them naturally or they don't I don't think there is an absolute way to train a dog to like something like riding. It has been my experience some do some don't. We have pets that love riding and 1 that will ride but doesnt like it.

I wouldn't force it to ride. Some like it some get sick. Once it truly bonds to you it may forget its fears just so it can tag along with you. Forcing it could interfere with the bonding and make it scared of you. If it doesn't improve I'd get rid of it. Life to short to waste on a sorry dog unless you just want one to feed and be a house pet.

My wife hates when I get rid of hunting dogs so much that shes kept some and feeds them. I told her feeds to high to feed a sorry S.O.B ... Then next thing I know shes got the dog in her pen feeding him... :shock:

Its a sad truth but there are only a small fraction of dogs that turn out to be fantastic working dogs. Anyone who has ever owned one knows what I'm talking about. These dogs live a long time in our memories. Ie, Bob, my old bird dog. He would literally try and put the birds in my game bag. Never trained him to do that but he just got it. One pat on the head and he was back to hunting singles.

Too many settle on a lap dog and that's fine. But a good working dog is something to be coveted and sought after.

The OP said nothing about "working".

My younger heeler does not care for riding on the quad either. So she runs along the side. As most know, heelers can get pretty easy fleshing after a few years so I don't think this is so bad.

If you are determined then start slow by offering treats next to tractor, then on tractor while shut off, then running, and so on. Just need to condition her slowly. Hopefully she loves treats.

Sounds like she is very timid and 6 months is still pretty young. Foster her confidence and give her time.

One of the BEST working dogs that I've ever had never did get over it. He wanted to go from day one but he would puke and shyt all over the truck bed to and from wherever we were going. I switched feeding time to the afternoon so that he was running on empty and that helped some.
He's the official greeter now as his full time job is to lay by the front door and act like he's going to kill anyone over the age of fifteen that pulls in the driveway. He got pretty excited a few days ago when I went by on the spray rig so I put him in the passenger seat. He made it for two rows before he puked and went back to the house.

Na but if she keeps collecting the ones I cut off the team I will be in the POOR HOUSE..

Thanks for the ideas I guess she will have to run for a while or be tied up while I do chores I have no control over her from the tractor and she likes to chase and bite cows. I tie her up at the chute when working cows and take her to move them down alley she does good there and will jump to bite them on ribs if they balk at getting out of chute. But being young I have to keep tight leash on her as she is very active. Maybe this spring when it is not so cold we will train more.
