Help Me Understand

These two girls went to the sale barn today and there was 60 cents per lb difference between the two. First one weighed 320 and the baldy was 295. I won't tell you which was which just yet, but I'd sure like to know why there's that big of a spread if you see it.

300-400 brought up to 240---300 and down was 260

Baldy is the better looking calf. Top calf has size but not as flashy

Thanks for the response, M5. Makes sense to a point, but not 60 cents. You are correct, she did bring more.

I agree its shouldnt be 60 cent. And I am far from an expert but I do set a sales watching the buyers and what they pay more for. I really like the baldie and apparently someone else did too.

I can believe it. The Baldy is ALOT better calf and was lighter. The solid calf doesn't have near the shape and she almost looks stunted.

That's the trouble with selling singles. The black calf isn't very good. That said, mixed in a set of 20-30 head drove in the ring at once, half the time she'll sell right with them or once identified as a cut will go for $20/cwt. less to clear the ring.

I was hoping she was better than 1.50 tho. :lol: Wishful thinking on my part, huh? She's not stunted as they are two weeks apart in age. I'm learnin'! Thanks for the responses.

I got to looking at my stub and a really low number bought the black one, which is probably a buyer. The baldy went to a high number making me think it was issued that day to an individual.

Sure shows it in that the picture. I never noticed that looking at her, which means I still have to get a better eye when I look at animals. Thank you for your observation.

I know what you mean, without the hobby folks with 20 acres of grass that buy the runts in the spring I wouldn't have anyone to buy the calves I'm selling tomorrow.

thats easy those calves are totally differant from eachother.an you had 2 or more buyers wanting the high selling calf of the 2.the guy that bought the 2nd calf got a deal.an he will make his money later.
