Help me scratch the itch properly

I got the itch to buy a new rifle. Don't need one but that's irrelevant at this point if you know what I mean.

Wanting something hot, fast and flat to kill strays, coyotes or anything else at some pretty good distances. Have narrowed it down to three calibers. 22-250, 204 or the 221. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated. (I want to make a good decision on this since the risk of smuggling another firearm into the house could lead to a suspension of all kitchen passes for the next few months.) :lol:

Go for the 22-250. You won't regret it.

I like the .223 a lot tho' cause they are very cheap to reload.

I have a friend who used to have this "smuggling" problem.

He started taking his lunch to work every day in a gun case.

I bought one of these. It is alot of fun. Like a little sniper rifle. I have shot all kinds of stuff with it... from birds to deer and hogs... and it looks good. :D

AND since that is not on you list. I have shot several .204s and I am not a fan at all. :(

My brother bought a Colt AR-15 and that is a good shooting gun.

Yes, that would be an excellent choice, but to my knowledge, no one sells the loaded cartridges.

I agree. All this big gun stuff to shoot coyotes is waste of good lead and gunpowder.

I know this is way of base here from what you are probably looking for. But i have been intriuged with the thought of owning a 50 cal bolt action sniper rifle.

Something about being able to hit a target at a mile off that just seems to me to be what a rifle is all about. exspecially if you dont care about tearing up the meat like a yote. :lol:

I know it would be an exspensive rifle to shoot. But boy it would be worth the little extra exspense. Heck i would deer hunt with it. Tear a little meat up or not. ;-)

They're expensive per shot to shoot but the beauty of them is, you only shoot a few rounds at a time and that's about all the fun you can stand.
There were a bunch of old cracked concrete water troughs on one piece of range that the rancher wanted removed. I had a couple of customers that had 50 BMG single shots. We spent the day blasting the concrete into smaller chunks. It was a blast, in more ways then one

Those long range rifles are interesting. But realistically not for us average shooters. I mean who has time to set these things up when there's a YOTE running across the pasture? At say 300 yards? that 22-250 or competitive rounds are REALLY GOOD!
If you want more fire power the 243 or 6mm or even 270 in 130 grain will give you something you can SPLAT a hog with. And the 270 is a real good deer gun. :D :D

Why not go one step further - build one - or get one made for you.

Mix and match cartridges and bullets.

Lots of interesting wildcats out are if you are a reloader.

I own a Miller N1 - best darned elk, bear, dear cartridge out there - and yes, I have taken them all wth this outfit. I call it old ugly - drives tacks to about 300 years and then hits bread plates to around 550 yards.

When i was in the National Gaurds i got to go out and fire a fully automatic 50 cal a couple of times. But there was this one time in picticular that me and a buddy got selected to go to the 50 cal range during one of our summer camp training sessions.

There was us and three other pairs of 50 cal gunners on the range that afternoon with a stack of ammo boxes that was about 3' high x 3' wide and 5' long. And all of that ammo had to be used up and the brass picked up before we could leave the range.

Well when me and my buddy got to the range with our 50 the other 3 were setting the head space and timing on theirs. A couple were already fireing on semi automatic 1 round at at time. Shooting at a papper zero target about 100 yards down range. I still to this day dont know why.

So when we got our 50 ready to rock and roll and throwed a belt of ammo in it. We flipped ours on fully automatic and started out shooting 5 to 10 round burst. :lol: We knew we would have been there all night shooting one round at a time.

It was not but just a minute that all 4 50's were firing fully automatic. And i know on ours we were not shooting just short burst but almost a half a belf of ammo at a time before we were done. Our 50 froze up on the last belt with about 5 rounds left to fire in it. It had gotten so hot we were affraid the round that started up into the chamber might cook off.

We had to leave it alone for about 30 minutes before taking the last rounds out of it. And the barrel on it was so hot it was red like molting medal.

When they picked us up in a helicoptor and we got into the air. There was about 5 or 6 acres of woods on fire down range where the tracer rounds had caught it on fire.

But that was alot of fun that day blasting away with thoes 50 cals hammering. Ocassionally we would fire the 60 cals and they were alot of fun also but nothing like the 50's.

I have wanted one of them every since that day. :lol:

Stepper, I agree with you about the long shot. But a Barrett is a little more than I need. $2.50 a shot kinda pricey too. Unless you are shooting full metal jackets, there wouldn't be anything left of a deer and if it was, you might have to climb 20 foot up a tree to get it. Those rifles are amazing.

I'm wanting something to throw under the seat of the truck and forget about. In the event I see something that needs killing, I want to reach out and touch it. I also like to watch the cricket jump on the range to.

I'm leaning toward the Remington 700 LVSF. I've always been partial to the 700's but don't have a light caliber. Was leaning toward the 22-250 but got sidetracked by the 204 and the 221. Probably going to sleep on it tonight and if the fever is still high in the morning, I'll seek help before this itch becomes a rash. :lol:

I understand. :lol: But now while you got the itch you cant let a little thing like money stand in the way. And with that 50 cal you will be able to reach out and touch them ! :lol:

And true there might not be much meat left. :lol: But if it is a good buck just aim a little futher back toward the flank and the horns will still be ok. You just wont have to worry about capping it out. :lol: It should be cut down small enough that you can take what is left to the taxidermist to cap out for you. :lol:
