I have 17 heifers that are roughly 18 months old and have been with a bull for 3 months. I noticed today that some of the heifers were riding each other. I hadn't noticed this behavior for some time. Do heifers sometimes do this even if they are bred just playing around, or is it always a sign they are in heat? If it's a sign of heat, our bull must have been lying down on the job.
 
Somtimes heat, somtime dominance, somtimes just for the the helluva it. If one is standing to be ridden it's usually (but not 100%) that she is in heat.

What I observed recently was the one being ridden starts walking when the other one mounts; it doesn't last but a few seconds.
 
Just one open heifer could get the whole group worked up. If she's walking away she may be starting/ending heat or it could be just playing around.
 
Last spring we had a cow that we AIed, 3 weeks later she came back in so we truend her in with a bull, but she was already out of standing heat. Ran her withthe bull for a month and never saw her bred. We pulled her back out and the next month she was standing again. Decided we had enough of that foolishness so didn;t breed her again. When we weaned calves and preg checked it turned out she had settled to the AI breeding. 8 days before her due date she popped out a dandy heifer calf. I almost wish I was bald so these dumb cows would'nt make me so grey!

I've seen em riding out of dominance, trying to get one out of the way so she can get to the hay feeder or water. Prob nothing to worry about unless she stands or they keep riding till the hair comes off the tail head, riding just once wouldn't convince me.
