I am awaiting my customer to show up this evening and pick up his heifers. He is taking all of my weaned commercial heifers. This is the third year of him buying them from me. He is taking 9 heifers. They averaged 690.5 lbs at almost 7 months. The oldest is about 6 days shy of 7 months old. I had great grass this year and it really showed. Heaviest weighed 756 lbs and the lightest weighed 639. I weighed them and hit them all with a shot of lute for peace of mind and am kicking back waiting on him to arrive. I think he will be really happy with this batch. He is paying a premium price which makes my pocket book happy especially with zero commission and haul bill for me :cowboy:

What breed...and if you can say or at least in a general range, what is "premium price"? I am just trying to learn more. If not, I understand..

We just sold 4 heifers at the sale barn this past weekend and was real happy..($1.50 to $2.00) but they were smaller and younger than yours but just wondering on the older one via private treaty.

I sold them all by the head for the same price at $1,100 each. Roughly 1.60 lb on the average weight. They were all Balancer heifers sire by Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls.

Well done, Hoss! This is the kind of "Management Protocols" and sensible sales technics that one must use in order to make $$$ at the end of the year! No commission and no shipping costs brings you considerably more than $1.60 per pound.

Vic (3way) will be proud of you! So am I.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I am just a small time producer trying to put the best product I can out in the field. I have somehow got lucky enough to stumble onto a winning formula.

Some say " You stumble around enough eventually you stumble into something!". :). You did good with your wisdom and some grace but why $1100? Why not $1200 or $1140 ir ? Knowing your stock and how you honor your place I think you left some on the table...
Then again I might just not know you. :). Good deal fellow. :)

$1100 for just weaned commercial heifers is an excellant price. You did real good Hoss :tiphat:

Kingfisher,

There was a couple of reasons I priced them at 1,100. I probably could have gotten 1,200 but this is a three-peat customer and 3 of the heifers were still recovering from pink-eye and were wearing eye patches. This customer has also expressed a strong interest in buying all of my bull calves next year. I have the potential to sell all of my commercial calves each year at one place for cash with no commissions and he picks them up on the farm. I felt 1,100 to be a premium price here in my market area compared to the sale barn.

Right now I have 3 very fine registered heifers. They are staying in the herd so technically they are not for sale.....but......every man has his price

Hoss-

In your consideration of what should be a reasonable, pragmatic, and common sense approach to establishing a monetary value (dollar amount) on your Registered weaned heifers (IF you were to decide to sell them!), the TIME required for (1) Gestation, (2) Calfhood development (3) Replacement heifer backgrounding (4) Vaccine and Immunity Management (5) Post-weaning nutrition and (6) Early Breeding Season management must be taken into account.

Time, Management strategies, and Registration Association requirements carry financial obligations on the part of the producer. Commercial weaners don't possess that 'baggage'.

good job hoss on all accounts.....

I use to price all my weanling bulls at 5000. People wanted to buy a weanling figuring they could buy him cheaper that way....

I wanted to develop all my bulls properly and avoid over use too early and ruin my reputation....

my reaction was to say sure....there is likely a 5000 dollar bull in the bunch....would likely save me some time and trouble if you can find him today....

Hoss, since you've sold 3 years of heifers from your commercial herd, how are you replacing those cows?

I am in the process of switching from a commercial herd to a registered herd. I sell the commercial heifers and keep the registered heifers that are born on my place or buy some registered heifers at a seed stock sale.
